Girls name Zuri?

What do people think on the girls name Zuri? It's the first name I've found that I've actually really liked, been so fussy with girl names! I like names that are a bit different!

It is of African origin meaning 'beautiful' in Swahili, but we are white British, do you think people would find it strange if we named our daughter this?

Thanks in advance.

I really liked this name for my daughter, she is half African tho.
I don't think you should name your white baby it lol

Balonzette · 06/09/2021 23:57

I think it's lovely and doesn't sound made up.

I wouldn't raise an eyebrow at an African person with a British name or a white British person with an African name.

It's a pretty name.

MooseBreath · 06/09/2021 22:46

I don't think it's an issue choosing a name from another culture. People wouldn't find it weird if OP named her child Layla, Isaac or Mariam, so I don't see why Zuri is an issue!

I like the name, it's lovely!

I prefer Suri

SoSoSoSleepy · 06/09/2021 20:10

I think it's lovely. I considered it myself but discounted it for the reason you mention. Having said that, the name we eventually went for has ancient greek origins... I'm still not sure how I feel about it, perhaps I was overthinking it.

peaceinourtime · 06/09/2021 10:00

Zahara, is also nice, those probably better known for Angelina Jolie's daughter. I've known a few, they've been lovely.

I know one
I think it’s nice
My little dd gets Zuri and Siri mixed up

Elisemum · 05/09/2021 20:16

@CallMeRisley

How about Suri? Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise’s daughter is called that
Oh yeah that could be better actually… then you wouldn’t have to explain to lack of African heritage. Good advice
ShinyNewStart · 05/09/2021 19:49

It's a shortening for Zürich, similar as Brum for Birmingham.

MissDollyMix · 05/09/2021 19:42

Well, I wouldn’t bat an eyelid at anything these days. Zuri is ok. Easy to spell I guess? Not my cup of tea and, to be blunt, seeing as it’s not from your cultural heritage, I find it a little ‘try hard’.

Nice

Mamascoven · 05/09/2021 19:35

It's my daughters name and Iv never had to spell or explain it to anyone 😊 it was the only girls name we liked as we wanted something unusual but not made up. I am half Caribbean & half white, partner is white British if that even matters. If I met a white british child with the name I wouldnt think twice about it - if it's a name you love go for it.

WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy · 05/09/2021 09:47

Would you like that name and to spend your whole life explaining it and spelling it for people? No, so don't do that to your child.

Confused

It’s not cruel for a child to have a non-Western name.

manhattenrain · 05/09/2021 09:46

Zuri is beautiful!

FelicityPike · 05/09/2021 09:43

It’s lovely.

NormaSwilly · 05/09/2021 09:42

Ok I have checked and stand corrected, apparently Mzuri can be translated as beautiful but in my years in Africa I never knew it used in that way. Always as good/fine/you did well/ etc

It's the primary response to a greeting,
How are you? Mzuri sana - meaning very well thanks, I'm fine.

NormaSwilly · 05/09/2021 09:36

Zuri doesn't mean beautiful in Swahili.

MZuri means good
Maradadi means pretty/beautiful
Malaika is a popular one that means Angel.

I don't know if that makes any difference to your feeling about the name which I quite like.

KaycePollard · 05/09/2021 09:34

Wasn’t there a rhinoceros called Zuri?

WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy · 05/09/2021 09:25

Another nice similar name is Zaria

GemmaRuby · 05/09/2021 09:25

I wouldn’t use it personally if you have no connection to the culture it’s from.

WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy · 05/09/2021 09:23

I think it’s a beautiful name. I would assume that it’s an African name but wouldn’t think it’s weird of you to use it. I’m not African though so it’s probably not for me to say.

Givemethatknife · 05/09/2021 09:22

I think people would just assume you made it up. If you explained its origins then some people might think it was a bit odd or naff, some might think it was cultural appropriation, most wouldn’t care.

I would ideally try and find something with a bit more cultural history that’s relevant to you/her - Xanthe could be a good one? Zara, Zoe, Xenia, Cicely, Circe, Ione, Ismene,
