Lena or Lina were probably the most popular girl's names in our very local area in Germany) about 16/17 years ago - also know a Magdalena that age but unshortened; the Lina and Lenas are all full names. DD has never been in a school class or out of school club without Lenas and Linas to confuse me with as when talking about friends/ acquaintances of hers I've only met briefly or never met I can't remember who's Lina or Lena

Definitely stand alone names, widely used.

Lena is a stand one name , I knew one.

HellonHeels · 05/09/2021 19:55

My great aunt was Lena. Short for Catherine. Where she lived the locals struggled to pronounce it, it came out as Catlena then shortened to Lena

BiscuitLover09876 · 05/09/2021 19:05

@BusySittingDown

I used to live with a girl from UAE and she was just Lena. It wasn't short for anything.

Lovely name on it's own IMO.

Lena is normal name meaning ray of light.
OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 05/09/2021 06:58

I know a Lena who is Elena.

I also know of a Lina who is Pasqualina, believe it or not!

My granny (born 1900ish) was a Lena but her official name was Ellen.

Givemethatknife · 04/09/2021 22:39

I think originally Lena was a short of Magdalena or Helena/Eleanor but any name like Adelina , Selena etc would work. It’s a name in its own right but I do think it’s a bit nothingy like Nina and is better as a nn.

itsgettingwierd · 04/09/2021 21:11

Evangelina was my first thought but the problem with choosing name with an intended nn is that other people don't always get the memo and will use their own nn!

Lena is a name is itself. Isn't one of the Tindals DDs called Lena?
