Cecily on a boy?

AnneBoleyn6 · 03/09/2021 23:25

So my wife really likes Cecily for a boy (usually pronounced Sess-ill-lee, but comes out more like Sess-lee when talking fast).

I love the name Cecily, but I don't know about it for a boy. We both don't really like Cecil. We do like traditionally girl names on boys, though.

I just am not completely sold. What do you think? Can you help me love it?

I've thought about this.
No.
Just no.
Really.
Don't.
Please.
No. No. No.

CatsArePeople · 10/09/2021 13:42

Just call him Sue Grin

LittleMysSister · 10/09/2021 11:12
@Ticklyrain Yeah, I know it's really feminine. She said it's fairly uncommon, at least where we live, which I'd say is true, the only Cecily I know is Cecily Strong from SNL, so most people wouldn't immediately know it was a girl name? The area we live there are a lottt of people with names usually associated with the opposite gender.
I'll mention the Sissy thing to her tho. Maybe that'll get her to think of others.
Na sorry, people do know it's a girl's name even if they don't personally know a Cecily. It's just like calling him Cecilia.

trevthecat · 10/09/2021 10:58

Oh god no! It's bloody awful

Rossetti47 · 10/09/2021 10:48

NO!

minipie · 10/09/2021 10:43

Don’t be silly.

Blackberrybunnet · 10/09/2021 10:40

Boy Named Sue

senseofdoom · 10/09/2021 09:23

OP are you in a French speaking country?
I know of girls names being mixed in with boys there, that is pretty much just marie. Or maybe Spanish - they often adopt a family girls name somewhere in the mix.

I knew a lot of Cecils in France, fairly common there, not a traditionally old man's name like in the UK (though probably just about to become popular based on current trend to ressurect older names).

Please don't do this if you are in the UK. Listen to Johnny Cash, a boy named Sue! Your DS would have to be a big character with strong fists to cope with this.

@Elisemum

I genuinely hope this is some kind of joke? Are you bored on a Saturday night and had one pint too many? Or are you really serious? As others suggested why don’t you change your own name to Cecily? Or Rebecca? Or perhaps Lilly? All great names for a man don’t you think? 😂
We discovered that in one branch of my family Lilly was a common middle name for the boys! It was used frequently until the mid C20th but we never found its origins - we assume a surname somewhere.

However, that doesn’t make Cecily an acceptable name for a boy.

peachycream31 · 10/09/2021 06:59

If

peachycream31 · 10/09/2021 06:58

@dementedma

Hilary is a name which sounds very feminine but can also be used for boys?
Of one of your friends is the Great Gatsby and you live in New England and wear plus fours and intelligent spectacles?
Elisemum · 09/09/2021 08:40

@SunLovingMum Jesus, that’s bad alright, poor girl/woman. Should have changed her name

dementedma · 09/09/2021 08:06

Hilary is a name which sounds very feminine but can also be used for boys?

SunLovingMum · 09/09/2021 08:03

@Elisemum Kevin’s dad, Kevin, wanted a son very much. He wanted a child named after himself so insisted on Kevin for heir only child, a daughter. She has a very traditional Christian female middle name as her mum had hoped they could eventually use that it no, her dad insisted on Kevin. I wish I could tell you so you could see her on FB but I think that is unfair. She’s from a southern state in USA.

Kdubs1981 · 09/09/2021 07:58

No

HoikingUpMyBigGirlPantss · 09/09/2021 07:54

He'll be bullied for having a girls name

hedgehogger1 · 09/09/2021 07:46

Sounds like you love the name more than the poor kid you want to suffer with it

Annoyedandirritated · 09/09/2021 07:46

Horrific and Setting him up for a lifetime of bullying

Bythemillpond · 09/09/2021 07:44

Yeah, I know it's really feminine. She said it's fairly uncommon, at least where we live, which I'd say is true, the only Cecily I know is Cecily Strong from SNL, so most people wouldn't immediately know it was a girl name

It isn’t really feminine. It is a feminine name and of course people would know it is a girls name why would you think otherwise?
Even if people don’t know who Cecily Strong is they know that Cecily is a girls name and the boys version is Cecil

Elisemum · 09/09/2021 07:43

@SunLovingMum, you can’t possibly be serious? How is this even possible?

SunLovingMum · 09/09/2021 07:33

I did meet a woman by the name of Kevin. Caused no end of confusion. One can only imagine the issues she had growing up. She was late 50s when I met her.

Why do you want to set your child something socially to over come? Why purposefully give them an unnecessary challenge.

Elisemum · 09/09/2021 07:15

@Triphazards, yeah absolutely.
I just wonder if OP was serious, it’s killing me, I must know!:)

Triphazards · 09/09/2021 07:06

I call it child abuse.

Elisemum · 09/09/2021 06:51

Was this thread just a provocation? OP are you still here? Would love to know if you came to your senses after reading the comments?
