The top names of 2020 by ONS should be coming out any-day now! Do we have any predictions of big improvers or fallers? :D

@OverTheWater the same people post on here all the time so you'll see unusual names pop up because the poster likes them
I always suggest Tristan and Laurence on here but have never met one and both really underused, but they pop up a lot on here because of me and a couple of other posters who tend to like more unusual names

I think Guy is a safe choice popularity-wise

bloominglovelyorange · 07/09/2021 13:55

@Smurftastic Ah felicity is my favourite of those 3 - I love it but have never met one but yes check the Dark Greener graphs will help you decide if the upswing is too much and puts you off

Smurftastic · 07/09/2021 12:23

@bloominglovelyorange I wanted to check if Felicity has gone up.
Might stick with Cecilia or Serena instead.
Darkgreener is a great site, thanks!

OverTheWater · 07/09/2021 12:10

Guy - I've checked on dark greener, it's been bumping along at 50ish per year for ages but gets suggested on every thread here. Worried I'm ahead of the game on the next version of Arthur!

I need a crystal ball really.

bloominglovelyorange · 07/09/2021 12:06

What's that name then @OverTheWater
You can check for trends on Dark Greener website, it's pretty obvious what's getting popular and what is falling from that website.

And obviously if you don't want anything too popular avoid the top 100 names completely I'd suggest.

OverTheWater · 07/09/2021 11:53

@bloominglovelyorange

They've delayed it again if you look at ONS. Looks like won't be til October/Nov now
Oh no! I too need to check whether my favourite names have gone up! Our top boys name is v popular on here but not (to date) IRL . . .
bloominglovelyorange · 07/09/2021 11:52

What names are they @Smurftastic ?
I know it would be helpful to have the new stats but the general trends are pretty obvious if you go on Dark Greener you can predict most names movement

Smurftastic · 07/09/2021 11:35

That's disappointing. I'm due in 2 days and wanted to check if a couple of names I like have gone up. Oh well!

No idea as I don't know any new babies, but can't wait for them to release the data! What is taking so long [grin[!

finallychangedmyusername · 05/09/2021 18:49

My predictions for the boys:

  • Oliver still to remain at 1st, and George at 2nd
  • Alfie and Archie to fall out of top 20
  • Teddy, Edward, Theo and Theodore all to rise
  • Noah to fall, but still be in top ten
  • Hugo to rise from 48th
  • Bobby to rise from 68th and Robert from 115th
  • Eli to rise from 107th
  • Oakley to fall out of top 100 (at 98th in 2019 data)
  • Dexter to rise from 114th
  • Otis to rise from 124th
  • Vincent to rise from 136th
  • Nathaniel to rise from 137th
  • Logan to fall from 29th

And the girls....:

  • Harper to fall from 29th
  • Willow to rise slightly from 19th
  • Penelope to rise from 41st
  • Top 20 to remain with majority of names starting with a vowel
  • Arabella to rise from 71st
  • Anna to rise from 82nd
  • Thea to rise from 46th
  • Chloe to fall from 39th
  • Margot to rise from 94th
  • Lara to rise from 97th
  • Beatrix to rise from 164th
  • Seren to rise from 196th
  • Phoebe to rise slightly from 22nd
35andThriving · 05/09/2021 17:41

I reckon Penelope, Cora, Hope and maybe Dorothy have become more popular for girls. I reckon Theodore, Leo, Arthur and Arlo will have become more popular for boys.

With Dorothy I know 2 little ones, but don't know if this is just a coincidence.

FuckingFlumps · 05/09/2021 12:46

I think A names for boys are incredibly popular. Arthur, Albie, Archie, Arlo.

This is so true where we are I'd be very surprised if the top 20 didn't include a large amount of A names. Honestly at some baby groups around here DS is the only boy not to have a name beginning with A. We are drowning in a sea of Archie's, Albie's, Arlo's, Arley's and Alfie's.

As for girls we're meeting loads of babies with nature names and still quite a few old type names such as Edith, Margot, Nancy and Mabel.

Tigger85 · 05/09/2021 12:37

In my area I have heard lots of Leo, Theo, Arlo, Albie, Rowan, Charlie, Arthur and Henry. Luca will probably climb because of the new Disney movie

Girls I have heard lots of Ava, Ada, Sophia, Evie, Amelia, Luna, Isla

StarshipsAreMeantToFly · 05/09/2021 07:35

I'm wondering how many Ethans there will be. I know a couple of people who had it on their list but went for an A name instead

PurplePizzaCake · 05/09/2021 07:27

I think A names for boys are incredibly popular. Arthur, Albie, Archie, Arlo.

Otis seems to have shot up in popularity too.

Agree loads of Sienna's too, not sure which girls name will be number 1 though

StarshipsAreMeantToFly · 05/09/2021 07:20

I know of a fair few naturey names, so wren and Rose and Robyns/Robins.

StarshipsAreMeantToFly · 05/09/2021 07:19

I hope Olivia isn't still number
I think Charlotte might take the top spot. But agree, where are all these Olivias?!

Classica · 05/09/2021 03:16

Loads more Margots and Teds.

whatausername · 05/09/2021 03:08

I think Guy, Charlie, Naomi and perhaps Penelope and Rose will all be on the up. Frilly probably dropping down the charts.

35andThriving · 04/09/2021 23:21

I wonder how much the name statistics actually influence people's name choices, and how if the information wasn't available they might make different choices....just pondering.

SoSoSoSleepy · 29/08/2021 20:04

I know a few little Rosas.

Also agree with a rise in the less frilly nature names e.g. Hazel, Iris

Isabel / Isabelle continues to be popular around here. Plus short girls names beginning with a vowel - Ada, Erin, Eden etc.

IVflytrap · 29/08/2021 19:39

I don't know any young Penelopes but there's definitely been more interest in the name online recently, possibly since a Kardashian used it. I'd guess it's going up though not sure how far or fast. Ancient Greek names seem to be gradually gaining in popularity, anyway. I know of a Persephone born a few months ago, and someone else considering Athena.

torchh · 29/08/2021 19:06

@IVflytrap

My predictions for the girls:

Short (somewhat trendy?) girls names up: Sienna, Aria, Luna, Lyra, Zara, Erin, Erica, Zoe, Naomi

Short Irish names up: Erin, Orla, Maeve, Niamh, Aoife

Shorter less frilly vintage names up: Mabel, Margot, Edith, Esther, Audrey, Hazel, Nancy, Nell, Martha, Etta

Nature names up: Willow, Iris, Fern, Rowan, Robin, Wren, Pearl, Sky(e), Summer, Autumn, Winter

Longer frillier names down: Amelia, Isabella, Isabelle, Arabella, Aurora, Annabelle

Classics relatively steady: Emily, Charlotte, Sophie/Sophia, Alice

I hope Olivia isn't still number 1 Grin I don't know any young Olivias, where are they hiding them all??

What do you think of Penelope?
StevieNix · 29/08/2021 19:03

Lara for girls will shoot up (I know 3 born this year)
Also Ophelia, Ava, Ada and Maeve will go up
