What about Bertha on bc but nn Bethany which can be shortened to Beth or Anny?

I'm afraid I don't like it either. I loved the TV show though.

I'm amazed you think Elizabeth is old fashioned by Bertha isn't

ufucoffee · 29/08/2021 09:54

To me she would be black pudding Bertha

JanglyBeads · 29/08/2021 09:53

Well you obviously wanted to gauge reactions, and you’ve done it. In the end it’s up to you and the DF of course.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 29/08/2021 09:53

Its a machines name, be it the big Bertha guns of total annihilation or the helpful production plant of the kids cartoon...

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 29/08/2021 09:50

Bertha is a very harsh and unappealing name.

Hydrate · 29/08/2021 09:49

I know a Berthania, but she uses her middle name.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 29/08/2021 09:49

I wouldn’t go for anything with Bert in, it’s a really ugly sound IMO.

MangosteenSoda · 29/08/2021 09:49

Beryl is definitely in the same category as Bertha imo. Along with Barbara and Bernice. I think a lot of B names are hard to bring back.

AlwaysLatte · 29/08/2021 09:47

I too would worry if she was exceptionally tall or ever had a weight issue as the teasing is waiting to happen.

Badabingbadabum · 29/08/2021 09:46

This absolutely has to be a wind up? Balonz would be a more sensible name choice than Bertha Grin

NutellaEllaElla · 29/08/2021 09:44

I'd give it a wide berth.....a. it could berth many unpleasant nicknames.

Godwits · 29/08/2021 09:43

I love some older names like Beryl and even Ethel or Enid have grown on me since i named my teenagers

You like Ethel and Beryl but think Bertha is awful? How does that work?

OP posts:
LoislovesStewie · 29/08/2021 09:42

Please don't do it; I knew someone at school who was given her grandmother's name as a sort of 'honour'. It was awful, she hated it, we hated it and when she grew up asked everyone to call her by her middle name. That was a very common name ;think Jane or Susan (not either). And please not Alberta either, just as bad. Some names are extinct for a reason and this is one.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 29/08/2021 09:41

I get that it's cool to use the less obvious vintage names, but some names are redundant for good reason. Because they're very fucking ugly.

This.

ThePersonFromPorlock · 29/08/2021 09:38

@Orchid18 you beat me to it😂😂

Shadedog · 29/08/2021 09:37

Big Bertha
Miss Babs and Miss Bertha
Bertha Rochester

It’s a joke name

Palavah · 29/08/2021 09:37

@Godwits

If you want Bet, call her Bet

I don't like diminutives (is that the right word?) on birth certificates. Twee.

That's fine, plenty of people don't like diminutives (yes that's correct) on BCs.
ElizabethTudor · 29/08/2021 09:36

Bertha - no, it’s hideous
Bertha pronounced Berta - it would still be Bertha
Bertha with the nn Bet - it’s still bloody Bertha, which is still not a nice name to inflict on a child.

Why Bertha?

PearlyBird · 29/08/2021 09:31

No no no
I love some older names like Beryl and even Ethel or Enid have grown on me since i named my teenagers.

But Bertha is awful

Yondergoat · 29/08/2021 09:30

Black Pudding Bertha

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 29/08/2021 09:29

@ISpyCobraKai

Big Bertha. Don't do it.
This in spades.
Kanaloa · 29/08/2021 09:28

For what it’s worth, I find it far more twee when someone tells me their child has a really convoluted nickname. So they say something like oh this is Persephone but we call her Poppy. I just feel like saying well why did you name her Persephone then.

Godwits · 29/08/2021 09:23

Big Bertha was a massive cannon used by the Germans in the First World War.
It's a horrible name for a child.
