nickname Bertie, Thea, Bess?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
NiceGerbil · 30/08/2021 01:28

Personally I don't like the sound of it either but that is just my opinion.

NiceGerbil · 30/08/2021 01:27

Alberta? Similar nns?

Bertha is a hard no. Obviously she will be big Bertha. Irrespective of her actual size.

Beesh · 30/08/2021 01:22

Is this a wee joke? BERTHA?

Bedpost · 30/08/2021 01:06

@JanglyBeads

First thing too come to my mind was Bathilda Bagshot in Harry Potter. OK a memory mix up, but no.
Weirdly,me too. I don’t understand people desperately trying to think of an “underused but heard of name” and suggesting names such as Bertha and Agnes to try and be unique when these names are unusual because they are ugly whereas more popular names are commonly used because they sound nice. Surely you’d rather be called Charlotte or Katherine or some other “boring”name than be called Bertha. The name Boudica reminds me a bit of Bertha but is marginally better.

@Godwits

I love some older names like Beryl and even Ethel or Enid have grown on me since i named my teenagers

You like Ethel and Beryl but think Bertha is awful? How does that work?

It works because BERTHA IS A FUGLY NAME I am of the same opinion re: diminutives as the given name but.... in this case ANYTHING would be better than Bertha
Subbaxeo · 29/08/2021 21:46

@OVienna

Wasn't it a girl???.
It was a boy. I remember being stunned when I realised it wasn’t a girl!
OVienna · 29/08/2021 21:41

Navy-lee that is.

OVienna · 29/08/2021 21:40

Wasn't it a girl???.

LunaDreams · 29/08/2021 21:40

This is a great thread 👏

MumofSpud · 29/08/2021 21:37

No no no
What about:
Bea
Thea
Bess
Bessie
Betsy
Bryony

Subbaxeo · 29/08/2021 21:26

@OVienna

What about Navy-Lee? That one has really grown in me.
I remember that one! It was a while before I realised it was a BOY she was talking about🤣
OVienna · 29/08/2021 20:43

What about Navy-Lee? That one has really grown in me.

Cbeebiesrehab · 29/08/2021 20:15

@piratehugs

This thread is brilliant. The only Bertha I've met turned up cheerfully on our doorstep with a suitcase one day, claiming to be a friend of a relative in Australia. She stayed a week. Never heard of her before or since.
This actually made me laugh out loud Grin
PieceOfString · 29/08/2021 18:53

I'm sure it's been said already but I'd give that one a wide berth personally. Dadadum tscchh, I'm here all week. Grin

ShingleBeach · 29/08/2021 18:52

Do away with the Bertha Certificate and call her Samey Namey Amy Mae.

Kanaloa · 29/08/2021 18:50

Yeah, Bertha on the bc but known as Jessica, nickname Jessie is what I would do. Sure it won’t be hard to explain, my youngest is Ethel known as Rosamund with the nickname Olivia.

ShingleBeach · 29/08/2021 18:50

@Godwits

Oh and there's no chance she'll be big Bertha because our family are slim (third generation vegans) and athletic of build. Athletic like long distance runners who do Pilates.
Don’t count your (roast) chickens OP.

A life of being teased or hating her name could quickly lead to comfort eating on a grand scale, and carnivorous comfort eating to boot, in rebellion against the vegan dynasty who named her Bertha!

Wink
Godwits · 29/08/2021 18:47

I like your way of thinking, Kanaloa

So Bertha on the bc but have her be known as Amelia or Jessica (Jess or Sica).

OP posts:
Kanaloa · 29/08/2021 17:05

@Godwits

What about Bertha on bc but nn Bethany which can be shortened to Beth or Anny?
I actually really like this idea! Some other ideas for pretty nicknames for Bertha -

Amelia
Jessica
Rose
Maria
Lara

TheRabbitStoleMyHat · 29/08/2021 14:15

God no, why would anyone do that to a child?

Spidey66 · 29/08/2021 13:43

Awful, sorry

Shadedog · 29/08/2021 13:38

Lol @ Big Suze

Sisisimone · 29/08/2021 13:18

Bertha Tydfil GrinGrinGrin. Fucking hell I'm crying now! This thread is brilliant. And I thought it couldn't get any funnier after the 3rd generation vegan comment 🤣

Palavah · 29/08/2021 13:15

@Godwits

Mabel obvs! Richard Madeley is a perfect lyacceptable TV and radio host and a jolly good husband to Judy.
Hahahahahaha
Aspiringmatriarch · 29/08/2021 13:12

Bertha is bovine, slightly menacing, and utterly charmless OP. Just stop!! Grin Although, thanks for the entertaining thread.
