Rian pronounciation

Hi all,

4 years ago we tested our daughters name for pronunciation here (on morning of registration!). It was really helpful & accurate so thought would try again now that we have a newborn boy. Preferred name is Rian, how would you pronounce:

  1. Ree-un
  2. Ryan
  3. Ree-ahn
  4. Ree-anne
Any others?

We may play around with spellings if there is ambiguity. Thanks again !

I'd say 2 but presume it was a girl

BillyIsMyBunny · 25/08/2021 10:48

I’d pronounce it as 1, as the name Ian but with an R.

FelicityPike · 25/08/2021 10:46

I would think that was a girl too.
Knowing it’s a boy, I’d pronounce it as Ryan until corrected.

sillysmiles · 25/08/2021 10:46

As @SuperSleepyBaby and @LizzieAnt is correct.

Also a fairly common boys name in Ireland.

Kolabioa · 25/08/2021 10:43

@GemmaRuby

“Would this be more masculine ?”

No it wouldn’t, Rhian is a Welsh girl’s name

Ok thanks

When I lived in the uk, I would have said Ree-ann. I live in Canada now and there's a girl in my daughter's class called Rian and it's pronounced Ryan.

GemmaRuby · 25/08/2021 10:37

No it wouldn’t, Rhian is a Welsh girl’s name

peachgreen · 25/08/2021 10:36

Reeun. "Ree-anne" would be a girl's name and spelled Rhian.

Ellarain · 25/08/2021 10:35

I'm in Ireland, Rian means little king and is pronounced Ree un.

Sakura7 · 25/08/2021 10:33

It's a fairly popular boy's name in Ireland and number 3 would be the pronunciation where I am. Possibly 1 in different parts of the country.

In England it probably wouldn't be so well known though, and could be mixed up with similar girl's names. As you can see on this thread.

fluffythedragonslayer · 25/08/2021 10:32

Before I read the actual post I thought Ree-Anne and would assume female. (Rhiann)

As you say it's for a boy I'd probably pronounce it Ree-un like Ian with an R.

Kolabioa · 25/08/2021 10:32

@Waternoice

Just spell it with the 'h' Rhian Problem solved
Would this be more masculine ?

LadyCatStark · 25/08/2021 10:31

Most like 1 but not so much ‘u’ as ‘u’ in my northern accent is much more pronounced. I’d assume it was Kian with an R.

dementedpixie · 25/08/2021 10:28

I know a Rian and he pronounces it as Ryan

Tinkhasflown · 25/08/2021 10:26

@LizzieAnt

I'd say Ree-un, emphasis on first syllable. I'm in Ireland. It's a boys' name.

catchyjem · 25/08/2021 10:23

I would think 1.

CakesOfVersailles · 25/08/2021 10:21

That was meant to say 2 (unusual spelling of Ryan)

CakesOfVersailles · 25/08/2021 10:20

It it was a girl I would assume Rye Anne.

For a boy maybe 1 (Ree-un) or 1 (unusual spelling of Ryan).

Kolabioa · 25/08/2021 10:19

@TerribleCustomerCervix

1 but I’m in Ireland so more familiar with it.

Where are you based?

Hi, we are in Kent - Indian heritage

MadeOfStarStuff · 25/08/2021 10:19

I would assume you couldn’t spell Rhian so would pronounce it ree-ann

TartanJumper · 25/08/2021 10:19

Ree Ann, and unless I saw the child in question or knew they were male, I would assume a female child.

Polmuggle · 25/08/2021 10:17

4

Waternoice · 25/08/2021 10:15

Just spell it with the 'h'
Rhian
Problem solved

Wookydook · 25/08/2021 10:15

Ree-in. To rhyme with Ian as PP mentioned. Stress on the first syllable

BikeRunSki · 25/08/2021 10:14

I’d also think a misspelling or corrupted spelling of Rhian, and thus, that the child is a girl.
