Margot, Violet or Dorothy?

Which would you go for? I’m slightly concerned about popularity of the first two. I like the nickname potential of Dorothy, although maybe both Dolly and Dotty are slightly silly? Will probably use one as a first and one as a middle name.

OP posts:

Violet - I love this
Margot - I like this
Dorothy - I wouldn’t use

To me, Dorothy is still very much an ‘old lady’ name - I think it’s because I’ve known lots of old Dorothys and one old Dot. I can’t see it on a little girl (although lots of people do like it so maybe I’m in the minority!)

Dorothy
Margot
Violet
Love them all but I'd go in that order !

Dozer · 23/08/2021 20:52

Violet.

Prefer Margaret to Margot, and the former has options for nicknames like Meg or Daisy.

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 23/08/2021 20:49

Honestly, I don’t love any of them. Margot is the best, but I really prefer the spelling Margeaux.

Mommybunny · 23/08/2021 20:47

Don’t personally know any children with those names, but I think Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have a Violet and Dick and Angel from Escape to the Chateau have a Dorothy?

Margot was the Penelope Keith character on The Good Life, no? (I’m not from round these parts so I didn’t grow up watching that show.)

Violet is the nicest name of the three but I had a batty great-aunt named Violet who talked and talked and talked nonsense with every breath.

RandomDent · 23/08/2021 20:41

I like them all but would pick Violet out of those three. Have you thought about Pearl?

whatthejiggeries · 23/08/2021 20:40

Love them all but especially Margot

CirqueDeMorgue · 23/08/2021 20:39

Violet. Also really dislike Margot. Dorothy will always remind me of Wizard of Oz which i think is a good thing.

happydays2345 · 23/08/2021 20:38

Dorothy

DramaAlpaca · 23/08/2021 20:37

Dorothy and Violet are lovely.

Margot is hideous.

Love both Dolly and Dottie.

DemBonesDemBones · 23/08/2021 20:36

Love Margot and Violet but Dorothy is truly awful to my ears.

Velvetap · 23/08/2021 20:34

All so pretty.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 23/08/2021 20:27

Love love love Violet

TatianaBis · 23/08/2021 20:22

Love Violet, Margot is fine if everywhere. Dorothy is dreadful.

MalagaNights · 23/08/2021 20:18

Dorothy.
Whole name not shortened.
Love it.

It's strong and feminine.
Slightly unusual but fits with the old lady revival. (Which I love)

Violet is too near violence for me.

Margot is gorgeous.
But I prefer Margaret - it's slightly more edgy and glamorous I think.

toastofthetown · 23/08/2021 20:14

In terms of popularity, although Dorothy is out of the top hundred, it is rising very sharply in popularity. My favourite of the three is Margot. I'm not a fan of Dorothy, but I do like the similar Dorothea.

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 23/08/2021 19:56

they are all lovely!
Could I add Maeve and Thea...

ActonSquirrel · 23/08/2021 19:48

Margot is beautiful

Violet sounds too much like violent

Dorothy is just old sounding.

Viola is pretty?

PearlyBird · 23/08/2021 19:44

Margot.
The other two are awful.

RuthW · 23/08/2021 19:42

Dorothy is lovely. Violet is nice too.

goldenrachita · 23/08/2021 18:33

I love Violeta (Vee-o- letta) but that might be too fussy for your taste.

Firebird83 · 23/08/2021 18:07

Dorothy! You might also like Daphne?

IsThePopeCatholic · 23/08/2021 18:04

Violet rocks!

user1493494961 · 23/08/2021 17:40

I prefer Violet.

Pemba · 23/08/2021 17:39

Dorothy is nice and surely due a revival? Wizard of Oz, etc. There's also Dorothea.

Margot - I don't really like any Margaret derived names that much as Margaret still has a middle aged vibe to me. I probably need to update my associations with this group of names though.

I don't particularly like Violet, as it still seems a bit fusty Victorian to me, plus close to the word 'violent'. I love Viola though.
