Is my girls name choice really as bad as people are making out!?

I’m starting to get paranoid. Me and dh are due a baby girl early next year and have decided on the name Theodora. It’s a name we both love and feel suits our family.
We like that it’s the name of a character in The Haunting of Hill House. We also have a Lydia after the character in beetlejuice Grin.

However when I’ve been asked about names all but two people have pulled faces and one family member said it was a ridiculous name.
I don’t really understand what’s ridiculous about it so thought I’d ask here. Is it really that bad?

Really like it - great nicknames, Dora is lovely for a little girl and Theo/Thea for a woman. Strong, slightly unusual but not ridiculous.

Ignore the naysayers, it's a beautiful name.

I like it. I met a Theodora, nn Thea, and the name really suited her.

Cam2020 · 24/08/2021 18:55

It's nice!

I opened this post fully expecting something out there!

OliveBranch16 · 24/08/2021 18:21

It’s not really my style, but it’s definitely not “ridiculous”. It will age well, and it goes with your other daughter’s name. I love Thea as a nickname!

goldenrachita · 23/08/2021 18:13

There might well be a Thea or even two in her class at school. It's really in at the moment. It's probably just people not being aware of the latest trends. I remember only 10 years ago Noah raised a few eyebrows and look at it now!

I like it!!
Mo do like the name Thea

TillyTopper · 23/08/2021 17:18

Ooh! I love that OP, genuinely really love it!

peaceinourtime · 23/08/2021 17:15

I think its nice. Much like Leonora those types of names are popular.

Enko · 23/08/2021 13:07

Perfectly normal and acceptable name.

I like it a lot

CallyWW · 22/08/2021 00:31

It's a pretty name! Just make sure that you will be ok with her being called Teddy or Dora or Thea..

saraclara · 22/08/2021 00:21

I love it. And apparently it (or at least Thea) is racing up the name charts at the moment.

MrsPsmalls · 22/08/2021 00:19

A favourite Aunty of mine, so I love it.

whattodo2019 · 22/08/2021 00:19

i love it!! We know a few Theodoras.

Elspethelf · 22/08/2021 00:13

I love it! Don't seek family approval for your name choice

inpixiehollow · 21/08/2021 20:32

I've only met one theadora she was a toddler and very sweet, i think its a lovely name and you could do either dora or thea as a nn

Ellmau · 21/08/2021 19:14

It's very nice.

22Bug · 20/08/2021 19:57

I absolutely love the name. I would like to call my daughter Theadora as I prefer ‘Thea’ than ‘Theo’ start as it’s more feminine

SaffieSoph · 20/08/2021 19:57

Love it! Great choice

underneaththeash · 20/08/2021 19:44

It’s fine.

Moodyblue12 · 20/08/2021 19:43

Lovely name! Loved haunting of hill house although disappointed with s2! Theodora was a great character, think they called her Theo which is a bit masculine so I'd go with Thea

DelphineMarineaux · 20/08/2021 13:33

I have a Theodora so I obviously love it. I don't like the name / nickname Thea though. Mainly because it's the Greek word for aunt / auntie.

89redballoons · 20/08/2021 13:30

It's lovely!

I know a toddler Theodora whose parents call her Theo, which I quite like as a gender neutral nickname - a bit like Alex/Alexandra. Lots of other nickname potential if she wants to go by something else when she's bigger.

Balonzette · 20/08/2021 10:38

It's BEAUTIFUL!

I thought this post was going to be asking about like a layceee-maiii or something. Theodora is perfect. I love it. I can't think of a bad word to say about it.
