This may be a strange request but I'd like to know any bad associations or reasons I shouldn't use the following names:

Eli
River
Levi

Tess
Juliet
Ivy
Mila
Scarlet
Esther
Sabrina
Wren
Eve
Hazel

Hopefully this helps me cut out some names.Grin

Eli - Internationally speaking, many people would pronounce this name as El-ee. Which sounds like Ellie, so a girl's name
River - Internationally speaking, many won't be able to pronounce this name properly. And in my culture it's too similar to the word for beaver
Levi - Same as Eli. Many would pronounce this name Lev-ee. Also, the name is bad

Tess - Is that short for testosterone?
Juliet - Not that bad. But the French might mistake her for the month of July
Ivy - I don't like this name. I generally don't like names with English I's (Ay / Eye)
Mila - Too popular in my culture
Scarlet - Can't get past 'scar'. It's a no from me
Esther - Grandma name
Sabrina - Just not a nice name
Wren - Not nice, and hard to pronounce if you are not an English speaker
Eve - Another grandma name
Hazel - Don't know why, but I have always associated this name with witches. Literally every time I hear Hazel I think of witches

Babydust13 · 19/08/2021 09:38

Eli - love
River - like
Levi - bit Chevy

Tess - I know some dogs with this name
Juliet - nice
Ivy - love
Mila - like
Scarlet - not keen
Esther - not keen
Sabrina - nice but reminds me of the witch
Wren - like
Eve - nice
Hazel - I know some Hazels who aren't very nice people so it puts me off

I'd like to know any bad associations or reasons I shouldn't use the following names

Challenge accepted :-)

Eli- Every boy I ever taught called this gets called Ellie by the other boys (in fairness that may be my fault).
River- Stripper name for a girl, druggie name for a boy.
Levi- Belfield, Jackson, Watkins. I'm not saying everyone called Levi is a pedophile; some are serial killers too.
Tess- Boring.
Juliet- World's most famous suicide?
Ivy- Play a word association game with anyone and throw in the word Ivy. Everyone will say poison.
Mila- Just call her Sheila and have done.
Scarlet- Stripper name.
Esther- Means deceitful.
Sabrina- Horror film, horror series and the ubiquitous witch associations. She will be a goth.
Wren- You know kids become adults right?
Eve- Literally the least original girl's name of all time. She will envy girls called Tess and Mila.
Hazel- Have you not seen Watership Down?

Seashor · 19/08/2021 07:37

Milla with a double ll but I would think same pronunciation is a cyst under the eye so that would be out for me. Ivy is a poison as in the song so again out for me and Eve! Well which one? Eve A, B or C because it’s so popular. Isn’t Wren traditionally a boys name?

SionnachRua · 19/08/2021 01:01

River - too hippy and soppy
Levi - jeans
Mila - very nothingy name and too like Mia (which is also a dishcloth of a name)
Scarlet - I wouldn't be keen on Scar as a nickname
Esther - horrible, hissy sound
Sabrina - the teenage witch
Wren - ugh, no. Cute bird but leave it to the birds.
Eve - lovely name but dragged down by the hordes of Evies.

I didn't have critiques for the others and I actually like some of the above names Grin But you did ask!

Buttercup54321 · 19/08/2021 00:43

I know a Kabrina.
Selina?
Rowena?
Dont live Levi.
Lee
Leighton
Leon
Laurence
Elias
Elijah
Rory

Frederica852 · 19/08/2021 00:20

Scarlett always me think of periods!

miltonj · 19/08/2021 00:10

No negative associations for any.

I really like most of them. Levi is a brilliant name.

MNmonster · 18/08/2021 23:40

Being totally blunt, Eli, Levi and River all make me think of hill billies.

Esther reminds me of Esther Ranzten. Sabrina the teenage witch. Wren kitchens. I know about a million Eves now.

I like Ivy and Hazel. Although Hazel reminds me of Watership Down.

thingymaboob · 18/08/2021 23:37

@manhattenrain oh no I didn't know who Ivan was but had a google and can see why Australians would have a bad association. Urgh.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 18/08/2021 23:34

River-ridiculous
Levi-jeans
Sabrina- the teenage witch

manhattenrain · 18/08/2021 23:13

@thingymaboob Out of curiosity, do you know who Ivan Milat is? I ask because I've never heard of Levi Bellfield and wonder if he'd only really be known in the UK. (I'm living in Australia.) I think most Australians wouldn't use the name Ivan now.

Levi Bellfield raped and killed 3 girls. Levi will always have that connection for me.

Sarahvn · 18/08/2021 23:01

Lovely names
I really like River (could be for boy or girl I think?)
Wren
Tess
And Hazel

Someone said no nice shortenings for Sabrina - what about Rina?

WeAreTheHeroes · 18/08/2021 22:43

@Violetlavenders

Eli looks like a nickname for Elinor.
It's pronounced Ee-lie
lottiegarbanzo · 18/08/2021 22:26

Levi makes me think of Roots, more than Bellfield (whose name will be forgotten, for the most part, I think). It's a lovely, Biblical name, common enough to avoid any one association.

lottiegarbanzo · 18/08/2021 22:25

No, all good!

Personally I'd avoid Scarlet, as in 'scarlet woman' (also scarlet fever, small scar) and I just don't think it's very nice. But it is a well-used name now.

dryasaboner · 18/08/2021 21:33

@Mischance

All look great - except Sabrina, which I associate with the glamour model with the large boobs who was around in the 50s and whom my Dad fancied rotten!
That was the 80s wasn't it?
Violetlavenders · 18/08/2021 21:18

Eli looks like a nickname for Elinor.

PattyPan · 18/08/2021 20:49

River is too hippyish, I struggle to imagine it on a serious adult
Sabrina the teenage witch
Scarlet is a naughty child name
Wren makes me think of a weedy/feeble child

I don’t really have any negative associations for the others but I don’t particularly like Esther or Mila

WeAreTheHeroes · 18/08/2021 20:47

Eli is a name in its own right - not a shortened version of another name. Several of your choices are biblical names. I wouldn't choose Levi because of Belfield and the jeans.

Peccary · 18/08/2021 20:43

Hippy not happy for River

Peccary · 18/08/2021 20:43

Eli - like
River - too happy and associated with a sad death
Levi - just think of the brand

Tess - like
Juliet - love (this is DDs name so am biased)
Ivy - poison ivy
Mila - looks nice on paper but meela or myla?
Scarlet - really dislike the scar sound
Esther - like
Sabrina - like
Wren - dislike but don't know why
Eve - generic (DD has eve, evie, a a in her class)
Hazel - love

VienneseWhirligig · 18/08/2021 14:38

Wren looks pretty but sounds sort of unfinished as a name. Not keen on Mila but like all your others.

CoalCraft · 18/08/2021 14:35

Eli - Love it
River - Personally don't like "Object names" but no specific negative associations
Levi - Jeans/underwear brand, but a nice name personally wouldn't see this association as a deal-breaker

Tess - Gorgeous
Juliet - Romeo and... But again wouldn't consider this a dealbreaker
Ivy - See River. Also, I see Ivy as a weed
Mila - Fine
Scarlet - For some reason I associate this name with sex workers
Esther - Lovely
Sabrina ... the Teenage Witch. Still a good name though
Wren - Object name, though definitely a nicer one. She would forever be reminding people about the W though.
Eve - Adam and... Though lovely.
Hazel - Wasn't that Fiver's brother in Watership Down?

Eli, Tess and Esther are my faves.
