My aunt Margaret was known as Molly. It's a beautiful name.

Margaret has so many diminutives. Or you could use Margot? My auntie Margaret was called Marnie back in the 1950s.

Marnie, Daisy, Peggy, Meg, Molly, Greta, and of course, Maggie.

LesLavandes · 13/08/2021 16:00

Melinda

Mary. It's like Sally is short for Sarah. Difficult to say Mar and Sar as short versions. The R became an L which then had a Y added. Colin is short for Nicholas, (the COL bit in the middle then had IN added). I know it sounds mad, but that is just the way it is. I know Margarets who are called Greta, and of course Peggy is short for Margaret. It was Meggy which became Peggy.

I think you could get away with Amanda.

People in the UK tend to use Mandy as code for MDMA rather than Molly, I'm sure that association will fade when all this godawful mumble rap shite dies off.

Kitfish · 13/08/2021 15:46

@Booboobadoo

Margaret - as in Millicent Margaret Amanda, Milly Molly Mandy
This! You took the words right out of my mouth.

Have you ever heard the song Molly by Tyga, might put you off?

Pemba · 13/08/2021 15:40

Molly was traditionally short for Mary, as was Polly I think. Although they aren't actually shorter of course!

Dandy0911 · 13/08/2021 15:39

Shortened for sorry

Dandy0911 · 13/08/2021 15:38

A girl at my work is called mollie. Shortened to Molliandra.

WavesAndLeaves · 13/08/2021 15:37

My gran was Mollie as her full name! Probably unusual for the 1920s

JaninaDuszejko · 13/08/2021 15:17

@Marguerite2000

It's a name in it's own right, just like Daisy.
Daisy, like Molly, is a nickname for Margaret. It comes from the Marguerite daisy ironically enough.
