I have two relatives called Molly, one short for Muriel, the other a nickname for Monica

Marguerite2000 · 14/08/2021 17:04

@Mantlemoose

Why don't you just call your kid Molly if that's the name you want?
That's too straightforward for mumsnet. You have to choose a name and then choose another name which will be their nickname. It doesn't matter if it's a name in it's own right, or doesn't sound anything like the first name.
tiredanddangerous · 14/08/2021 13:18

The (adult) Molly I know is actually called Miranda. I'm not sure how that works because they're two completely different names.

The child Mollys I know (which is a lot because I work in a school) are all just Molly.

@Akire

How can Mollie be short for Mary when it’s 2 letters longer. Oh her name is Mary but we have lengthened it to Mollie…
It's not short for it, it's a pet name - like Ricky is no shorter than Richard, Donny no shorter than Donald, Lulu no shorter than Louise, and Johnny is longer than John!

@Cbeebiesrehab well the link I posted above to song called ‘kids on molly’ was released this week. It’s still something I hear a lot.

TeapotCollection · 14/08/2021 08:39

Glad I’ve given a few people a laugh

Sorry OP for slightly derailing your thread

I don’t even like Semolina, but I’m actually going to call it Molly now 😂

Cbeebiesrehab · 13/08/2021 23:52

I find it odd so many posters making the drug reference. I work with troubled teens who talk about drugs a lot (unfortunately) and I’ve never heard them use Molly, if so it bypassed me. Maybe it’s because MDMA isn’t their drug of choice. It seems quite a dated reference to me, like Lucy being linked with LSD.

gggrrrargh · 13/08/2021 21:41

Semolina has cracked me up @TeapotCollection

I actually call my daughter Molly quite a lot, no idea why as her name is Jasmine. It’s not catching on though it’s just me Smile

RAOK · 13/08/2021 21:37

@MistyFrequencies

Drugs. It's short for drugs.
Agree! Calling your child Molly is no different to calling them MDMA to me.

Also just google Molly. It’s a drug you can’t call your child it

UnwantedOpinionBelow · 13/08/2021 16:47

MDMA

@TeapotCollection

Shit! Sorry I didn’t notice this was in baby names, I was thinking about food as usual

Oops 🙈 apologies

I think I love you @TeapotCollection Grin😂
notnownora · 13/08/2021 16:40

We know a Mathilda known as Molly

Teenagers2grownups0 · 13/08/2021 16:38

@PowerhouseOfTheCell

Mollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly?
GrinGrin

Seriously though, if you like the name use the name. Don’t put a pointless longer one on the birth certificate 🤷‍♀️

SuperSketchy · 13/08/2021 16:38

Oh apparently it's because Marguerite is another name for a type of daisy in French! Every day's a school day.

SuperSketchy · 13/08/2021 16:37

I think it's because there used to be so many Marys and Margarets, they came up with lots of diminutives so people could identify their particular Margaret or Mary! I'm sure Daisy was originally a NN for Margaret too, which doesn't make sense but hey ho Grin

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 13/08/2021 16:36

I used to have a cat 'Molly' who was referred to as 'The Mollinator' because of her endlessly cheery and approachable disposition Grin

Akire · 13/08/2021 16:34

Ok my mistake “Molly” we have decided to shorted it by adding 1 letter Grin

Akire · 13/08/2021 16:33

SuperSketchy · 13/08/2021 16:32

Moira is lovely. Could also work with Maura maybe.

Bryonyshcmyony · 13/08/2021 16:32

My fried has a dd called Molly but her "proper" name is Matilda

Cathster · 13/08/2021 16:31

My nan was Molly, short for Moira (1920s)

SuperSketchy · 13/08/2021 16:29

I always thought it was a NN for Margaret too. I love Margaret, but the only one I know under the age of 60, hates her name! I think Margate is great and love Margot, Maggie and Peggy as nns.

I think Polly is a NN for Mary but may be wrong.
