Sibling for India and Rafferty

Looking for inspiration for a name which goes well with India and Rafferty? Don’t know what we are having. Quite like Bodhi for a boy but nothing really shouting out to us in the way of girls names. Georgia maybe possibly?!

Yeh my name is pretty boring and i felt sad about that for years, but now at age 51, im just glad it wasnt the name used to beat middle aged women with.

RedToothBrush · 15/08/2021 09:23

I definitely think thats the case.

The irony is that people with 'boring' names can hate them as much as those with unusual names. You have no way of telling.

mathanxiety · 15/08/2021 05:15

RTB - the article I was 'cherry picking' from was linked. It was a Guardian article.

Yes, there are threads where people wish they hadn't chickened out of names they liked because they were discouraged by friends or family members or thought they should stay in their own lane, name-wise, because to do otherwise would cause problems for their children. So I think class insecurity can be added to the list of reasons people have negative reactions to names.

BasiliskStare · 15/08/2021 02:40

& Victoria Coren-Mitchell and David Mitchell calling their daughter Barbara - now that is more out there than many names mooted on here I think Grin

DaisyWaldron · 14/08/2021 09:33

Yes, I know one young John and one baby Mary and their names stand out as unusual and quaintly old-fashioned.

RedToothBrush · 14/08/2021 08:13

I actually like John myself! But its not that common for babies these days so is almost a little different to the masses of Olivers, Theos and Harrys!

BasiliskStare · 14/08/2021 04:47

@RedToothBrush - I do get your point but had I been lucky enough to have another one I would have chosen John - Now you and many others may think boring but Johnny I think is a lovely name , But only my choice.

I am rather keen on Valentine. But then I thought I was going to call my son Guy until SIL said "Guy the Gorilla" - at which point I realised never ever tell any one your thoughts about your child's name in real life before they are born. After they are born - it is just their name Grin

RedToothBrush · 13/08/2021 23:40

@mathanxiety

You've cherry picked those to suit your own argument

Those examples are the main elements of each vignette.

The majority of the individuals contributing to the article cited the responses of stupid, ignorant, and possibly hard of hearing others as reasons they regret name choices.

What about all the threads where people say which names they really would have liked to use but were too chicken to do so?
RedToothBrush · 13/08/2021 23:37

Wouldn't it be boring if we all picked John and Mary which was the trend during part of the 1800s. Thank god different names are available and are generally accepted these days.

Theres a lot of very classic dull names (which is a far more middle class naming trend than unusual names, believe it or not - the higher or lower your class the more likely you are to 'go off piste' if you will). But a good splattering of more interesting names round these parts.

RedToothBrush · 13/08/2021 23:33

@DaisyWaldron

I know at least four people called Hester, three each of Athena and Micah, two called Allegra and Heloise and one each of Aurelia, Bede, Sorrel, Asa, Shoshana, Sage, Phineas and Torin.
Ive come across an Asa (love the name, lovely lovely bloke - was one of my favs but DH didn't even put it on his radar), Phineas (find that a bit too much tbh) and not a Sage or a Sorrel but a Coriander (yes real) before.

I think nature names are generally speaking in fashion - lots of girls named after flowers but there are plenty of more woodland type names too. So anything in this vein is fashionable atm. (This isn't new - it has ancient traditions dating back before Biblical names were the fashion)

For example I know of a Wren (which Ive always thought utterly beautiful by I don't think goes with India).

They are more hippy/lifestyle related than class imho.

India goes with anything nature like but I'd avoid anything too samey like another place. Asia doesn't work but Savannah would. Summer or Autumn would. Saffron is definitely up there. Rowan for girl or boy. Willow. Bryony. Aspen.

Personally im not keen on Bodhi. Bodhi is a surfer dude who is a bit dim. Rafferty lends itself to surname type names well and they fit with India. Or traditional sounding names with a bit of a twist which are a bit longer. Eg Everett, Emmett, Benedict, Bennett, Barnaby. I love Valentine but not sure how many kids could pull it off. But that sort of vein.

DaisyWaldron · 13/08/2021 13:26

I like Kit, but I'm not keen on shortenings as full names, and DH is too atheist to go for Christopher, so it never made the shortlist for us. And with the whole shortening thing, I'm happy to just accept that it's my particular taste and not come onto the baby name boards to sneer at anyone who calls their child Freddie or Harry or Jack or Sadie or Eliza because there's nothing wrong with those, either.

ParvenuLaLa · 13/08/2021 12:53

I find Kit quite old fashioned and classic. I'm no spring chicken and was raised on Enid Blyton books so it has that famous five secret seven vibe!

Good god, is it compulsory to come on these threads and suggest Kit ?? Awful name. The car in Knightrider ffs
Awful... in your opinion. I'm sure many people would think your top names are 'awful' and could make negative associations. I've liked Kit since I was a teenager and learned about Kit Marlowe. Loved the bohemian feel and sound of it. Can you not just think 'not for me' without being so damning and unpleasant about people's individual preferences? Not just you, but multiple people on this thread.

Maybe I'm just new to these baby names threads but my god, such unkindness on here. It's so easy to share opinions without unpleasantness.

@adrianmolesmole

Bodhi is appalling. Absolute man-bun of a name

GrinGrinGrin That's the funniest thing I've read recently!

a man-bun of a name! yes, that's hilarious!. Nothing against the name Bodhi but I know a few ''man buns'' who should be called Bodhi. They wish!
PearlFriday · 13/08/2021 10:09

@mathanxiety I had fun with that cso thing.

My DC were born in the uk but we're back home now so there aren't 7 girls with my daughter's name in 2003, there are 8 and there aren't 12 boys with my son's name in 2006, there are 13~

LOL. No class needs mentioning here

LOL- in your opinion

Germolenequeen · 13/08/2021 09:15

@Cbeebiesrehab

@Germolenequeen you know exactly what is being implied and to pretend it’s not a class related comment is just beingdeliberately obtuse

No you chose to interpret it as such

As soon as there's a celebrity with an unusual name (Kit Harrington) it always surges in popularity. People can't think outside the box for themselves. As soon as David and Victoria named their daughter Harper everyone jumped on that bandwagon too. People who think they are original end up being...well...unoriginal amongst everyone else choosing that name.
