Help! baby boy has no name!

sosonic · 09/08/2021 22:41

Baby boy is a couple of weeks old now and needs a name! We seem to like slightly unusual but known names. What are your thoughts/associations/expectations of someone with the name:

  • Guy
  • Lionel
  • Idris
  • Rudy
  • Wilbur
  • Felix
  • August
  • Basil

Any other suggestions of names we might like?
Thank you

I've got a Dexter we also liked Lennon Nixon and Eric

Noshowwithoutpunch · 12/08/2021 21:03

Guy is the only name from your list I'd consider.
I'd think of Guy as confident and dependable who knows their own mind.

OverTheWater · 12/08/2021 20:59

I know two adult Guys, one is a professor and the other is in prison Grin A universal name indeed.

There were only 30ish babies named Guy in 2020 so if it's going to surge it's got a lot of increasing to do before it becomes popular!

Namechangenumber23 · 12/08/2021 20:53

Blush oops! Sorry OP! Guy is a fab name

whatausername · 12/08/2021 01:59

Guy gets asked about or suggested on here a lot. I think it's on many people's radars but they haven't all noticed yet. It's at the beginning of a surge. I know one little Guy and two friends have also listed it as an option.

queenie273646 · 11/08/2021 22:16

@sosonic my Dh is called guy I love the name ! Great choice I also would of choose between guy and felix.

GreenTortoise · 11/08/2021 22:09

@Namechangenumber23

Guy. Only ever known two to speak to and both were lovely so it only conjures positive feelings in me. This makes me feel very fuzzy and warm, it's a long time since I was sat choosing our sons names! Congratulations OP SmileFlowers I'm sure you'll just know when you see him Star
OP mentioned he was a couple of weeks old Smile
Katefoster · 11/08/2021 22:06

I know 2 grown up Guys and I absolutely love the name. Both Guys are fantastic so only has good connotations for me. I suggested it to DH but he wasn't keen but I really love it

I agree that Guy is versatile and can suit any age. I know four off the top of my head - a professional orchestral musician, two barristers and a sporty teenager.

OnlyToWin · 11/08/2021 21:39

What about Jonte? (Jon-Tee)

Violetlavenders · 11/08/2021 21:36

I like Guy and August.

SuperSketchy · 11/08/2021 21:26

I truly find Guy neutral, which is why I really like it. It could be a really cool younger man who works in music production or an older gent who is a retired solicitor. It's really versatile imo, so works for all sorts of people. The best sort of name imo Smile

(PS: it was on my list for ds, so I may be biased. We didn't use it in the end though)

sosonic · 11/08/2021 21:24

Thank you all for your replies! DS1 has an unusual name and, although there are some suggestions here that I really like (e.g. Sebastian, Hugo), I'd quite like another slightly less used name to avoid one being jealous of the other. That is one of my hesitations about Felix...

So at the moment it seems that Guy is our frontrunner (I haven't given up on August, though DH is less on board..) with Felix as runner up. I am interested to know what your expectations would be about someone called Guy?

Thanks :)

  • Guy- like it I think, but reminds me of Gus the mouse of Cinderella 🙈
  • Lionel-Ritchie, think it still sounds very old man name
  • Idris-Elba, think it such a unique famous name that it will have this reaction for a while (more so if he ends up being Bond)
  • Rudy-okay, no connotations just never been a huge fan, can't say why 🤷🏼‍♀️
  • Wilbur, can't get away with this either, not sure why.
  • Felix, like this too, and I do think the whole felix the cat thing is tailing off, it's a pretty cool name.
  • August, not too sure
- Basil, brush or the herb, really can't warm to it as a name 🤷🏼‍♀️

Based on your suggestions have you considered Ray or Raymond? It's a strong name, traditional but unique I'd say

SuperSketchy · 10/08/2021 19:52

I like Guy, Rudy and August.

Of the three, I think Guy is the most neutral maybe? So I think I'd go with Guy Smile

ladygindiva · 10/08/2021 16:00

I have a friend with a Basil, I really like it. She loves calling him in the style of Sybil Fawlty

HonorHiding · 10/08/2021 15:55

I love Guy.

How about Angus?

CaffiSaliMali · 10/08/2021 15:52
  • Guy - no particular thoughts, I like it's short simplicity
  • Lionel - no particular thoughts
  • Idris - I would guess their family was either Welsh or Muslim
  • Rudy - no particular thoughts
  • Wilbur - posh
  • Felix - posh, I like it though
  • August - posh/Princess Eugenie
  • Basil - posh/Fawlty Towers/Brush
Chilldonaldchill · 10/08/2021 12:30

Guy - I really like this. I think of it as very upper middle class if that bothers you. Red trousers!
Lionel - I'm not keen. I do like the European pronunciation though
Idris - I like this a lot
Rudy - I'm not keen. Just because it sounds like rude - y
Wilbur - I like this
Felix - I love Felix. It's very much a safe option though. I know A LOT of Felixes (all in their teens)
August - I love this but with two celebs calling their babies this this year you might be thought to be copying
Basil - I can't get past Fawlty Towers

Guy, Idris, Wilbur, Felix and August are all really nice

Balonzette · 10/08/2021 11:46

Love Rudy, Wilbur and Felix! Don't like the rest.

Enko · 10/08/2021 10:53

I love Basil always have but sh was a firm no

Conrad
Bastian
Hector
Bertram (Bertie)

Willow5643 · 10/08/2021 08:16

August is beautiful. Strong history, and meaning. I also adore Idris and Felix. Great list!

robotcollision · 10/08/2021 02:38

I adore Idris. It is a really great name in every way - cute for a small boy but stylish when he's older. Top of your list imo.

Also like Wilbur but it's a bit soft.
Lionel is really good too.

I like Basil - Bas for short. You have to get past Basil Fawlty but I'm sure you can.

Lots of lovely names on your list.

Namechangenumber23 · 10/08/2021 01:42

Literally before I'd clicked on your thread and had only read the title, the name Felix popped into my head! Adore the name.
Also love the name Hugo.
