Is Jules/Jools inevitable?

I love Juliet but really don’t like Jules/Jools…I think I probably need to let Juliet go but its so hard!!

I’m in the same boat. Love Juliette and Genevieve but don’t really like any of the obvious nicknames. I’ll ways call my DD by her full name and I guess whatever nn she ends up with, if any, is out of my control anyway. This has just made me think of a sibling group I know (30’s age group) Pete, Ed and Kat(hleen) known by only those shortenings to friends but full name only to parents. An ex boyfriend of mine as well, Chris, but only ever Christopher to his parents.

peaceinourtime · 05/08/2021 13:21

I love it though I think the shorting of Jules/Jools is inevitable. Jools/Jules is nice to if that's what happens.

Peccary · 03/08/2021 22:16

DD (4) is Juliet, never anything else (other than our silly pet name) . What nickname she chooses is up to her in the future but I'll only use her full name

Chilldonaldchill · 03/08/2021 20:27

The two I know are called by their full name by everyone.
My children have names that are traditionally shortened to names that other people might even use as full names (think Bella or Tom or Charlie) and everyone said that we would never manage to avoid their names being shortened. They're pretty much adult now and no one shortens their names ever.
It's nowhere near as much of a thing as Mumsnet will always have you believe.

lljkk · 03/08/2021 11:44

I quite don't like Juliet (sorry, just one opinion from Internet random).

You do have to accept that they may get lots of nicknames they like fine & you don't. This is a risk you have to accept.

"He's Matthew, not Matt!" -- By age 12, only his mother calls him Matthew. etc.

CaffiSaliMali · 03/08/2021 11:36

I know a Juliet and a Juliette. Both go by their full names only.

I don't think it's inevitable unless Juliet chooses to go by Jules.

It's a beautiful name.

Cbeebiesrehab · 02/08/2021 20:17

Definitely not inevitable. Just introduce your chosen diminutive from day one and others will follow suit. I like Ettie/Letty as a diminutive.

GintyMcGinty · 02/08/2021 19:33

Juliet is lovely.

Just call her by her full name. No need to shorten.

LimpLettice · 02/08/2021 19:31

I also have a second cousin Juliet. Often Julie or Jools, but she herself mostly goes by Juliet I believe. Beautiful, brave lady I hero worshipped as a child, so I think it's a wonderful name, shortening or not!

SpeedRunParent · 02/08/2021 19:20

Gorgeous name. And it can be shortened to Jools, which is cool.

lemoncrisp · 02/08/2021 17:34

Beautiful name. The only one I know is always Juliet, no nn.

PlainJane1000 · 02/08/2021 17:19

The Juliet I know is never called a shortened version. Smile

toastofthetown · 02/08/2021 17:18

It's not inevitable, but it is an obvious nickname. There's a not insignificant chance Juliet might want to be called Jules and there's nothing that you can do to stop that. Other posters talking about how they know Juliets who don't like or use Jules is kind of irrelevant, because your Juliet might like it.

SummaLuvin · 02/08/2021 17:14

Not inevitable, but will always remain a possibility. If you truly hate Jules/Jools don't go there. Yes, there are other nickname options. Yes, many women are known exclusively as Juliet, but you cannot guarantee your Juliet will be one of them. No amount of correcting friends/family as a baby will make a difference if at school she decides for herself she quite likes Jools, after classmates call her that.

Pegasusmail · 02/08/2021 16:59

Absoultely beautiful name

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 02/08/2021 16:58

I'm a Julia and have never had Jules (I wouldn't object to it, but everyone has just always called me by the full name). The couple of Juliet's I know are both called the full version as well (or at least I've never heard them referred to as Jules). I don't think it's commonplace in the way perhaps most Samantha's are Sam's, Alexandra's are usually Alex or Lexi etc. BTW I love Juliet - underused Shakespearean elegance.

Violetlavenders · 02/08/2021 16:27

Jools doesn't even sound similar to Juliet. I wouldn't shorten it at all.

Fifthtimelucky · 02/08/2021 16:10

I have known two Juliets. Neither was ever called anything other than Juliet.

Oneearringlost · 02/08/2021 16:07

Juliet is beautiful!
Always call her that and she will probably keep it, but there will be times that it'll be shortened. It will be up to your DD to accept it or not.
My sister is called Hils ( Hilary) by some deeply close friends and her DH. Hilary by others.
My DD has always been Imogen, though a few of her childhood friends called her "Immie" for a while. She always recognised herself as Imogen, though, and thus she is.
Be prepared for a shortening, accept it, but always call your DD Juliet, she will come out of it, I would say, and adopt Juliet as her adult name.
I love that name, go with it.

Kanaloa · 02/08/2021 15:53

I don’t think Jools is inevitable, but she might choose to be called it herself, so if you really have it I probably would avoid. I know a toddler Julia who is called Juju which I thought was cute.

CloudPop · 02/08/2021 15:51

Lovely name.

Lemoncurtain · 02/08/2021 15:11

I knew one that went by Jet

VioletWillow · 02/08/2021 15:09

I have a Juliette - and everyone calls her Juliette 🙂 I don't think anyone has ever even suggested Jools actually!

Moonlaserbearwolf · 02/08/2021 15:07

@NuffSaidSam

No it's not inevitable. Most people will call you what you introduce yourself as. If not, a polite correction is usually enough. Very few people just insist on calling you a different name.

The deciding factor will be whether she prefers Jules when she grows up. If she starts using it then everyone else will too.

Agree with this.

I know two Juliets who’s both use their full names. I also know a Julie and a Julia, who call themselves Jules. My friend Rebecca has always used her full name - it’s perfectly possible, but many people like shortenings. This could happen with many names and as the parent, you won’t have much control over it. I know a few people who are known by a nickname which they picked up at school and is nothing like their actual name - nothing their parents could have predicted!

Violetlavenders · 02/08/2021 15:03

Exactly. Juliet is so easy to say.
