Hi

We love the nicknames Ed, Eddie and Teddy but would want to have a fuller name on the birth certificate.

We like Edward, Edwin and Edmund and wondered thoughts on these? As much as we like Edward we know so many boys in our area with this name and so thought maybe Edwin or Edmund might be more unusual! Please rank these names in order!

Any other suggestions much appreciated!

I love Edmund and Edward but Edwin has always seemed a bit drippy to me. I don’t like Edgar either, probably because my main reference point is the villain in the Aristocats Grin

Heh1991 · 03/08/2021 01:32

Thank you so much everyone! Made it even more complicated as Edgar has definitely become a contender too!! Thank you!

Like Edward and Edmund.

TheVolturi · 02/08/2021 20:47

Love Edward, but would not shorten to Teddy.

TatianaBis · 02/08/2021 20:41

@Violetlavenders

How do you get Ned or Ted from Edward or Edmund? I can understand Ed as shortening.

Anyway I prefer Edgar as an Ed name.

They are traditional dims of Edward. Like Jack for John, Harry for Henry, Jim for James.
TatianaBis · 02/08/2021 20:40

Love Edward. Dislike Edwin and Edmund as they are wet and faintly comic.

Like Edgar though.

How do you get Peggy from Margaret or Polly from Mary or Jack from John? Strange are the ways of the nickname-creators of the English language.

In order:
Edward, Edmund, Edwin, Edgar.

Edmond is another possible spelling but I expect people would get it wrong a lot, which would irritate me intensely.

Much prefer Ted to Teddy. Ed and Eddie are OK too.

SpindleWhorl · 02/08/2021 17:33

I like the Buzz Aldrin connection for Edwin!

SpindleWhorl · 02/08/2021 17:32

@Annie188

None how horrific!
How terribly progressive
Beamur · 02/08/2021 17:19

Edwin
Edward
Edmund
Edgar
Edison
But actually they're all nice, so it's really which one are you most drawn to?
Ed, Ted, Ned, Teddy are all lovely diminutives. I think I like Ned best. I know a super sweet dog called Ned 😁

OP - the reason you've met loads of Edward's is that it's a completely classic, timeless name (as far as I know, it's not left the top 100 boys names since records started in the 1300's!). Used by royalty as well as by Shakespeare, Dickens, Austen, Bronte etc - an Edward could be any age and it has about a dozen nicknames (so it matters less if there's another one in his class to me). If you like the name, Edward's popularity doesn't matter imo because it won't date.

I do have a soft spot for Edmund too, but it doesn't feel quite as timeless to me (and will always make some people think either of Blackadder or Narnia, where as Edward has too many namesakes to be linked to a particular character). Edwin is a bit "blah" in comparison to me, I actually prefer Gothic Edgar over Edwin. For me:
1.Edward
2.Edmund
3.Edwin.

seamonster9 · 02/08/2021 14:06

I love Edmund

Teflondreams · 02/08/2021 13:37

Edward out of your list but Edison is by far and away my favourite of the Ed names.

Angel2702 · 02/08/2021 13:35

I love Edwin so my order would be Edwin, Edmund, Edward but I also like Edgar.

KirstenBlest · 02/08/2021 13:26

I like Edgar too.

All of them are nice but Edward is the safe option. Edmund makes be think of Narnia. Edwin makes me think of Buzz Aldrin.

I like Ed and Eddie.

Teddy is too popular for me to like it. Ned is awful, sorry.

35andThriving · 02/08/2021 08:51

I like Edmund, I love Edgar. I can see why people like Edward but find it a little overused.

Cbeebiesrehab · 02/08/2021 08:43

Edward but if Edison was on your list I would 100% pick that one!

Enko · 02/08/2021 08:34

Edwin Edmund Edgar (as yes like that too) Edward

Tryingtryingandtrying · 02/08/2021 08:17

Edison is a lovely name as PP says above.

WimpoleHat · 02/08/2021 08:15

I came on to suggest Edgar as well - it’s unusual, but classic. Not keen on Edwin, though.

Anyway I prefer Edgar as an Ed name.

Some that begin with “E” (or sometime “He”), traditionally have affectionate short forms which begin with N:

Edward - Ned
Helen, Eleanor - Nell

This comes from the medieval use of “mine” to refer to close family members - so “Mine Ed” and “Mine El” became “my Ned” and “My Nell” as language evolved.

With Ted, it was also common to change/swap/add letters at the front of a name for variety, a d to make them clearer when shouted across a battlefield/hunting ground. Eg Ted, Bill, Bob are the variations that have stuck.

ForkedIt · 02/08/2021 08:04

@Violetlavenders Do you think people called Ted and Ned are actually Tedward and Nedward? Grin

FredaFox · 02/08/2021 08:02

My dad was an Edwin and everyone called him Ted

katienana · 02/08/2021 08:01

Married to an Edmund, I think it has a nice soft sound to it.

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/08/2021 07:57

Edmund will always be Blackadder to me Grin
