Love it. Would have been my daughters name but I have 2 sons

Onlinedilema · 06/08/2021 07:18

I like it but it is a bit twee.

@BertieBotts

I love it.

Also seeing hidey and high-dee as the same. Is it about the stress? HI-dee vs hi-DEE? I'd put the stress on the first syllable.

Bear in mind it's originally short for Adelheid, which is pronounced ah-del-hide with the stress on the Ah. But it can be a name in its own right these days.

She definitely does pronounce it differently and is constantly having to correct people....But im realising now it is probably to do with accent. She is Scottish.

Most people pronounce her daughters name like the verb to "hide" and then ee.

She says it is the sound like hi / high and then Dee.

I'm saying the above sounds in her accent in my head and they are two distinct sounds (the first part of "hide" vs hi/high) but she is Scottish. I'm realising that in an English accent these two sounds are probably the same.

I think in in an english accent it would be high-Dee, the way she says it. So it sounds like she just prefers the English prononciarion, as opposed to the the Scottish which would be a much shorter, sharper first syllable.

I like it but that's probably because it was my mothers name :)

RestingStitchFace · 03/08/2021 15:37

I think it's lovely. Go for it!

RolloTomassi · 03/08/2021 13:15

Love it, always have. Think it's cute on a child and cool on an adult.

Tal45 · 03/08/2021 13:14

I know a lovely one too, I like it.

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 03/08/2021 13:07

I think most names ending in ‘ie’ sound are going to sound cutesy/twee.

It’s a nice name - The very opposite of ‘downmarket’ Shock

MintyGreenDream · 03/08/2021 13:04

Twee

RagamuffinCat · 03/08/2021 12:51

I know a really lovely adult Heidi, so the name has a good association for me.

Love it

Love it. Was on our list for DD3.

LimeRedBanana · 03/08/2021 02:47

@yourestandingonmyneck

It's not my favourite name but it is quite nice.

Out of interest, how is everybody pronouncing it?

I would always say it like the verb to hide with a y on the end - "hide-ee"

However my sisters good friend has a lovely daughter, age 12, and her mum always stresses the fact that it is pronounced like the word high. "High-dee"

I always thought that was in unusual and that she would have a battle on her hands insisting on that pronunciation.

I would say Hi-dee.

But actually how are they even different?!

Maskedrevenger · 03/08/2021 01:27

Sorry I think anyone from a certain era such as grandparents will be mentally adding on -hi to the name. It was the first thing I thought of tbh, it’s actually a lovely name but the sound of it is forever associated with that TV programme in my head.

TinaYouFatLard · 03/08/2021 01:19

It’s a wonderful name. Not at all cutesy to me.

Pemba · 03/08/2021 01:16

Maybe I'm misreading it, but the pronunciations you describe sound just the same to me.

I like it. It is a feminine name but one that is still strong.

ActonSquirrel · 01/08/2021 20:23

If she lives in the Alps and has a friend called Peter who herds goats it might work

Muchmorethan · 01/08/2021 17:37

Love it. But l maybe biased.

Iflyaway · 01/08/2021 17:31

I know a lovely Heidi. Not even European but from the Philippines (sp?).

I always associate names with the wonderful - or less so - people I've met in life.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 01/08/2021 17:22

Not a fan. Makes me think Heidi Hi (I guess only a select few will see the ref!)

I know of two though - one is 7 and one is 47. Both lovely.

Cressie2 · 01/08/2021 17:18

Big fan. Go for it.

3AndStopping · 31/07/2021 13:01

It’s funny people are calling it cutesy because if anything I think it’s quite a harsh sounding name! Which is where my reservation comes from…
