Carlin/carlyn after a family member named Caroline? I've been watching bringing up the bates and it's really growing on me

Or even a witch.

scottishnames · 30/07/2021 15:30

In Scots, carlin is a traditional insult, meaning 'an unpleasant or disliked old woman'

In that order.

ApolloandDaphne · 30/07/2021 13:40

I assumed it was a boys name.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/07/2021 13:38

I immediately thought of the Bates Family so it's a no from me.

cariadlet · 30/07/2021 13:37

Like pp, love both Carrie and Callie as NNs for Caroline or Carolyn.

cariadlet · 30/07/2021 13:35

Never heard of it and it sounds made up. I had to read the thread to work out if it was supposed to be a boy's name or a girl's name.

Bumblecattabbybee · 30/07/2021 13:25

(I too thought it was a boy's name from the title.)

Bumblecattabbybee · 30/07/2021 13:24

As soon as I saw the title, I just thought "Wanna can of Carlin'?" 😂

Caroline is gorgeous, can't you just use that? Nickname Carrie or Callie? Or even use Carrie/Callie as full name? Just not Carlin/Carlyn!

Pinkywoo · 30/07/2021 11:28

Reminds me of working in a pub in South London, "I'll have a Carlin' darlin' ".

Joolsin · 30/07/2021 11:25

Is it for a boy or a girl? I know one adult man called Carlin, I quite like the name. Don't think I like it for a girl, though.

First thoughts - black label
Yep, me too.

First thoughts - black label

KeflavikAirport · 30/07/2021 10:03

It means pug dog in French, so it's a no from me.

Chilldonaldchill · 30/07/2021 08:54

I assumed it was for a boy.
Caroline is much nicer for a girl.

DemBonesDemBones · 30/07/2021 08:50

I'm reading it in the voice of the exorcist lady from Poltergeist.

Roselilly36 · 30/07/2021 08:11

Instantly thought about the lager, so not a name I would chose.

Nextchapterofmybook · 30/07/2021 07:44

Calling black label haha

FelicityPike · 30/07/2021 07:34

How about Coraline? (Like the film)

Happy36 · 30/07/2021 07:29

Carlin is a brand of stationery shops in Spain, like Ryman.

honeylou42 · 30/07/2021 06:26

No doesn't sound nice at all

Onlinedilema · 30/07/2021 06:00

Yes use Caroline.

paddlingon · 29/07/2021 23:49

Caroline is a much nicer name.

ofwarren · 29/07/2021 23:46

Why would you not use Caroline?

CoffeeCake23 · 29/07/2021 23:46

Carlin is not a tribute to Caroline. It's nothing like it! If you want to name your child after Caroline, call your child Caroline.
