@Seashor

My son’s private school; Alister, Rupert, William, James, John, Sebastian
They are good names, not out of the ordinary. I know and have known some of each. I'm not sure that they are more 'private school' than state though, however it's not something to which I've given much thought. I gave my two quite ordinary, classic names because 1. I liked the names and 2. I didn't want them to have the mick taken out of them; so no Aphrodites or Honeysuckles from me (though I do actually quite like those names).

Nice to see 'John' on your list. It's not so popular these days except as a second name, though you do still see Jonathan, shortened to 'Jon'. It's a good solid name (my nephew is a John), nobody would ever complain about being called John.

No first hand experience, but most of the people I’ve met from private school just had very standard names (Henry, Jonathan, James, Natsha, Emma…) some with less common nicknames (e.g. Jonnie and Jonty rather than John, and then some crazy nicknames too), and then the odd incredibly posh or elaborate name (Piers, Quentin etc). Those seem to be the exception though.

My DC went to the local comp and they have some friends with "posh" names eg Jeremy, Melchior, Jemima. Most of their friends have "ordinary" names. Lots of Ellies, Oliver, Alex (male), Sam, Luke, Katie, Charlotte, Zoe etc.
.......
Not one of those is posh, they are all ordinary and pleasant names which you hear everywhere, except perhaps for Melchior which, in English, means a large wine bottle. There is a Dutch footballer called Melchior, and Melchior was one of the three wise men in the Bible. I haven't come across any Melchiors but I know Hebrew names are very popular at the moment, they are good too.

FittedSheet · 28/07/2021 16:56

What, do you think they’re a different species?

Privatia Privilegia

Maggiesfarm · 28/07/2021 16:51

They are nice names except for Achilles, I can't get my head around that one. Very nice indeed and not that unusual as to cause mick taking (except for Achilles :-)).

Actually I looked up Achilles, I knew he was a Greek something but forgot quite what:
"In Greek mythology, Achilles or Achilleus was a hero of the Trojan War, the greatest of all the Greek warriors, and is the central character of Homer's Iliad. He was the son of the Nereid Thetis and Peleus, king of Phthia."

Not all bad then but I wouldn't use it for a son of mine. Or Hermes.

My DC went to the local comp and they have some friends with "posh" names eg Jeremy, Melchior, Jemima. Most of their friends have "ordinary" names. Lots of Ellies, Oliver, Alex (male), Sam, Luke, Katie, Charlotte, Zoe etc.

Friends of mine with dc at private schools have names such as:

Harry (x2)
Tom
Daniel
Rosie
Ella
Nicholas
Edward
Holly
Luke (x2)
Oliver
Lisa
Beth
Sarah
Victoria
Charlotte
Henry

So quite traditional names on the whole but not particularly "posh".

Yrevocsid · 28/07/2021 15:18

My boys go to a public school (which for some reason everyone refers to as 'Private School' on MN 😬)

There is not a single Tarquin in the whole school, so that's a complete myth.

Their friends have normal names like Oscar, Will, Henry, Jack, Ollie, Ned, Miles, Charlie, Toby etc.

There are however a lot of nicknames used (completely mad ones at times which stick) and lots of surnames used to refer to each other as well.
