Im really stuck on girls names, theres not a single name me and my partner can agree on. I want something unusual but something really pretty and girly. Whats the most unusual names you've heard?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

DD thinks she should have been called it.

“This got me thinking about children’s names in the UK. According to The office for National Statistics, Khaleesi is more popular than Claire. Other unusual names include Le-a (the dash being part of the name.... Ledasha) and KV111lyn which is pronounced Kaitlyn (the V111 being Roman numerals for eight – a bit of text speak)”

It might be real

I call my kids nicknames and it’s only just occurred to me that people in the park might actually think they’re called Squirtle and Munch.

I remember a thread on here a couple of years ago where the ops daughter was talking about her friend 'pancake' from nursery. The OP assumed a mistake and asked Mumsnet what this little girls name could actually be. In the end the OP searched the nursery register or something similar, and her daughter was correct... a real life little pancake.
@ItsMeantToBe really?! Because yeah the urban myth is years old, at least a decade. Did you really meet one?
I registered her and processed the referral, she was seen by colleagues. We do get some strange names (some lovely too). It really doesn't help trying to pick my own baby name!

Rua - means ‘red’ in Irish I think. I thought it was quite pretty.

Several of these don’t seem that unusual to me - it’s interesting isn’t it :) Thomasina for example - I’ve met a few, named after a Thomas Hardy character I think?

@DaisyWaldron

I'm constantly surprised at how a racist urban myth started off such a huge trend, because it's a name that gets mentioned so often. I'm expecting La-a to show up in the ONS top ten names soon. Or perhaps there are just a few La-as and they are all incredibly well-connected.
I never knew it had racist/urban myth associations! I work at a hospital and it was the name of a new born baby that I was registering about 4 years ago. Always stuck in my head.

@ItsMeantToBe

Le-a

Pronounced Ledasha 🙄. Poor kid.

Awaiting Pocahontas McGuinty and Female “feemalay”.

That's interesting, Laureatus. I think the Rena I knew might have been short for Catherine.

FunnyWonder · 24/07/2021 20:33

Haven't RTFT, so the name might already have been mentioned, but there is a girl called Ocean in DS's school. Such a pretty name and it really suits her.

Buppers · 24/07/2021 20:02

@Illogicalmadness

Well it might have been Betsan now that you mention it. I really can't remember tbh, it was mid 80's & I'm an old bat now! Either one of those names, BetSam a or Betsan, are rare to my ears. I've never heard of anyone called that since.
was it Bethan?
Laureatus · 24/07/2021 20:01

@CremeEggThief I was going to suggest Thomasina. I worked with one, known as Tommi, a few years back! I have a cousin called Rena. Pronounced Reena - in Scotland Rena used to be a common diminutive for all names ending -ina, like Thomasina or Georgina so that's where her name came from (but it's her proper name, not a shortening)

HighNetGirth · 24/07/2021 19:54

Dorinda is another one.
My sister knew an Undine (more usually spelt Ondine, like the ballet).
Laurance
Ezra- very unusual for a girl
Allegra

Illogicalmadness · 24/07/2021 10:19

My teacher was Welsh, from the valleys.

BetSam? Definitely BetSam? Not Betsan?

Illogicalmadness · 24/07/2021 08:18

My teacher called her daughter BetSam. This is going back to the 80s so a long time ago but is the most unusual girl's name I've heard.

KaptainKaveman · 24/07/2021 07:55

My fave girls' name is Corisende.
