I know an Anise, after the spice Star Anise.

@GorgonzolaSouffle Florence is top 20 and the other two are pretty popular too. I know a few Ophelia’s.

Gertie75 · 25/07/2021 23:08

When I was at school there was a Sorcha, pronounced Sor-sha, there's now a girl at dd's school with the same name but pronounced Sorka

Calypso
There was a girl at nursery years ago who was called ‘Lady Cigourney’ ‘Lady’ for short.
Sequoia is popular around here, I have come across 3!
I have yet to meet a Meliora (name in my family tree)

"Ceinwyn (sp)"

Ceinwen is a Welsh girl's name so it could have been that? A bit old fashioned now though.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/07/2021 19:51

I'm struggling to think of some of the old lady names as unusual, maybe just unusual for babies now. Gloria, Beryl and Doris, for example.

Lowri (Laura) and Seren (Star) are also pretty common in Wales.

Crunchymum · 25/07/2021 19:50

Ceinwyn (sp) and Pumpkin (the name flashed up in Dr surgery so either mother or daughter was called Pumpkin!)

Gwenhwyfar · 25/07/2021 19:40

@cheesecrackerz

Some people here really haven't heard many unusual names...!

Half of these are pretty common

Especially Aurora, Elodie and Genevieve

Elodie and Genevieve are common in French-speaking countries, yes. Plenty of the other names mentioned, like Odette, too. You can look up how common a name is on the ONS site can't you?
Gwenhwyfar · 25/07/2021 19:38

OP please consider not giving your child a VERY unusual name. Having to spell your name all the time, have a fake name for Starbucks, etc. can make life difficult.
Not common, but known and understood would be good.

CrouchEndTiger12 · 25/07/2021 19:38

Annalise

Geneviève

Lorelei

Gwenhwyfar · 25/07/2021 19:37

@Grainjar

Morwenna Elodie
Morwenna and Olwen are common name among Welsh speakers. An Olwen is an old woman in my mind's eye though.
35andThriving · 25/07/2021 19:35

That would be a tough name to live with LadyCatStark. If they just liked the sound they could have used Iris. Such a similar sounding name but without all the baggage that comes with Isis. Poor girl.

LadyCatStark · 25/07/2021 19:07

Probably not the look you’re going for but the most unusual girl’a name I know of is Isis, named long after ISIS became a problem. She was named after the Godess, but surely they knew…

Havanalily1806 · 25/07/2021 19:00

I wouldn't say it's unusual, I think it's difficult to find a balance between uncommon names and names that are too out there which you would never associate as a name.

Anastasia is recognised but id say quite unusual to hear at the moment.

I also like Sutton, Cooper, Audrina, Raine as less common girls names

imamule · 25/07/2021 18:50

I think unusual names these days are the ones from my youth

Sharon
Tracey
Rebecca
Pauline
Paula
Michelle
Karen
Clare

I don't think I know any young girls without a "pretty" name these days.

Roonilwazlib1 · 25/07/2021 16:51

I used to work with someone called Apolline which I thought was beautiful (hopefully I've got the spelling right)

PrettyLittleFlies · 25/07/2021 06:59

I have met girls and babies called Meadow, Isolde, Leilani, Precious, Ondine, Pearl, Angelina, Angeline, Dotty, Maggie, Princess, Celeste, Barbara, Denise, Savannah etc... many of the names listed. I wouldn't say they were especially common though with the exception of Leilani which is extremely popular in some cultures.

So many of the names here are so pretty. I like the way names sound as well as look, especially singsong names like Angeline, Evangeline, Sonnet, Sarah and Kiekie.

Illogicalmadness · 25/07/2021 06:21

Buppers Not Bethan as there was a girl in my class called Bethan so that's not unusual enough. It could very well be Betsan which is a Welsh diminutive form of Elizabeth as is Bethan.
