We are a half British, half Greek family. We live in the UK but any name has to work in both languages/cultures. What do you think of our shortlist of baby girl names? Please rank and happy to hear positive and negative comments.

Artemis
Zoe
Melina
Arianna
Sophia

Middle name and surname will be Greek,if that makes any difference.

Also really interesting to see that Artemis is traditionally a girls name

The most pretentious couple I know have a son called Artemis, presumably telegraphing their lack of knowledge to many people Grin

Artemis is lovely! We have Greek friends whose daughters are Artemis, Antigone and Atlanta! All gorgeous but Artemis is my favourite.

SW1amp · 21/07/2021 21:51

I know an Oenone (ee-no-nee) and she loves her name
I think it’s really beautiful

MrsRLynde · 21/07/2021 21:51

Arianna is lovely.

MrsRLynde · 21/07/2021 21:50

Maia, Xylia, Ariadne and Athena.

ILoveShula · 21/07/2021 21:50

AR-tuh-mis

SantaSue · 21/07/2021 21:47

Just wondering how Artemis is pronounced?
Is it more like Ar-TEA-miss or AR-tuh-mis? Or neither?

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 21/07/2021 21:47

Melissa

Undertheoldlindentree · 21/07/2021 21:36

I feel Arianna is too connected with Arianna Grande at the moment. Ariadne is lovely, Amaryllis? Phaedra? Helena?

Lockdowndramaqueen · 21/07/2021 21:11

Another vote for Artemis! Beautiful, strong, phonetic, unusual. Lovely name.

coffeewithmilk · 21/07/2021 21:09

Sorry but when I read the list the first thing I thought of is melena.. it's pronounced the same as melina.. and its a medical term for bloody poo (sorry I'm a nurse and in my head I was like why on earth would anyone name their child that)
I like Zoe!

StellaOlivetti · 21/07/2021 21:06

My Greek grandma was Marina, which works in both languages. And I have relatives called Eleni, which I also like. From your list I prefer Zoe.

KirstenBlest · 21/07/2021 21:05

Arianna is nice but people will say it as Ari-AH-nuh. Not nice.

Olympia?

IdblowJonSnow · 21/07/2021 20:58

Of your list I like R
Arianna the best. Also love helena, iris and thea.
Isn't Penelope Greek? Also like that.

@QueenOfCatan

I have an Artemis, my main bugbear I have with it (bar MIL suggesting nicknaming her Missy Hmm ) has been that many people pronounce it Artemus. Drives me nuts. We went for Artemis over Artemisia as we felt it might make her name too long, but sometimes I think it would have been easier! She's 4 now and has started correcting the main culprit (my mother).
How do you pronounce it then?

Artemis is lovely for a girl. I went to school with a couple of Artemis’ (in the 80s) and the name is as beautiful now as then. Medea is lovely too.
