Lysander

It is my all time favourite boys name. I've thought for a while that it would really catch on and start to climb in popularity but so far it hasn't. So what does everyone think of Lysander?

My sons middle name is Lysander. Wasn’t brave enough to use it in the first name slot

Enko · 15/07/2021 10:52

Greek mythology that was meant to say

Enko · 15/07/2021 10:52

I once heard a mother calling her sons in the park: "LYSANDER! HECTOR! ACHILLES!"

Pretentious

I dont think pretentious when I hear a set like that at all. I think ohh Greek

They suit each other and are individual what's wrong with not wanting Oliver Harry and Archie?

Op Lysander is a great name go for it.

TheLeadbetterLife · 14/07/2021 22:46

We had goldfish called Hector and Lysander when we were kids.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 14/07/2021 22:42

Oh, missed your post about Sacha - yes I don't see why that wouldn't work.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 14/07/2021 22:41

Gorgeous and elegant imo - but because it's quite rarely used and strongly Shakespearean to boot, I think quite a few people view it as "posh/try hard" (it's a shame). Plus compared to classic Alexander you are a bit limited to nn's if he doesn't like it - I can only think of Sandy/Andy or Anders.

Enough4me · 14/07/2021 20:43

I really prefer Alexander.

worktrip · 14/07/2021 20:41

I have an Alexander. Similar sound but not quite so out there

TheVamoosh · 14/07/2021 20:21

It was our boy name for DC2, who turned out to be a girl. I absolutely love it.

toastofthetown · 14/07/2021 20:19

For a diminutive I love Sacha. It works for Alexander so I think it's not a huge stretch for Lysander too.

Only if you have another DS who you name Bob. Not Robert; Bob. If you're happy fielding questions about Lysander and Bob, then you can use the name.

Ughmaybenot · 14/07/2021 20:12

It makes me think of Jilly Cooper and the hopeless case in that! I don’t hate the name but it’s a bit much tbh, and I don’t really think it shortens easily/naturally.

thecognoscenti · 14/07/2021 20:11

I think it's gorgeous. Not sure I'd be brave enough to use it but it's great.

DennisTMenace · 14/07/2021 20:10

I would assume they were born around midsummer. Can't say I would choose it, but like Sandor for a shorter name.

irresistibleoverwhelm · 14/07/2021 20:03

I love Lysander. DD has a Shakespearean name; I probably am too late to have another DC, but if I did I would seriously consider this. Also like Hermia!

Whatabouttery · 14/07/2021 20:01

@SummaLuvin

It's called an observation sweetie

EssentialHummus · 14/07/2021 20:01

We were settled on a v similar name for DC2. I think you need to be happy with the nickname options though - my instinct with NNs is always to just string out the first syllable, but "Lye" doesn't really work.

SummaLuvin · 14/07/2021 20:00

@Whatabouttery

I know two people with dogs called Hector.
I know someone with a dog called Robert. Your point is?

Hector is a wonderful name.

Enough4me · 14/07/2021 19:59

My DS likes having a fairly regular boys name (1 of 2 in a year of 90) and not a theatrical name. One boy in his year has a similar name to Lysander, he loves it and all through primary has wanted to be a mermaid/butterfly so it fits with his strong personality.

grapewine · 14/07/2021 19:59

I think of Shakespeare. I like the name.

Whatabouttery · 14/07/2021 19:58

I know two people with dogs called Hector.

@1Wanda1

I once heard a mother calling her sons in the park: "LYSANDER! HECTOR! ACHILLES!"

Pretentious.

I actually also love the name Hector, but wouldn't use them together. That would be too much for me. I admire the commitment to the theme though.

@broodyas

I think it's gorgeous and would happily use it but DH wouldn't!
Lysander has been vetoed here too. I live in hope that he will change his mind (but I am doubtful).

makes me think of Salamander!!!! But a darn sight better than the snooze-fest names taking over this board recently. It does have an elegant, regality to it.

ILoveShula · 14/07/2021 19:53

All i ever hear being called in the park seems to be NOAAAAAH!
