Really like the names Rae and Drew for a girl? Could I have some thoughts please? I'm in the UK if that helps at all.

We have a girl Drew in our school and she is listed as Male on every single list I have seen.

ILoveShula · 14/07/2021 14:09

I know a Meike and she's female.

Micah is a prophet in the Old Testament. I think it's more a case of parents using a boy's name for a girl than it being unisex.

Someone I know has an Ezekielle. They had only thought of boys' names and wanted Zeke, but DC2 turned out to be DD2.

MaverickDanger · 14/07/2021 13:57

@ILoveShula I’ve met three female Micahs (all separately), know one Mica and one Meike (who is German) so I view it as unisex - or as I said, a boys name for a girl.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 14/07/2021 13:27

Rae is quite trendy now and many people will still guess it's short for Rachael (or maybe Aurelia) but it does have a nice sound imo.

Drew is a bit more masculine to me and I think if you used it on a girl most people would assume it was after actress Barrymore, if that matters? (or perhaps think it's Dru for Drusilla if they are Buffy fans!)

A lot of nature names are unisex -Rowan, Eden, River etc are nice imo, without sounding too feminine? Or perhaps classic Jamie or more trendy Nico?

emmathedilemma · 14/07/2021 11:31

I don't like either for a girl. Drew is very much a boy's name in Scotland (often shortened from Andrew). Rae is just awful (sorry).

ILoveShula · 14/07/2021 11:29

Micah isn't unisex, @MaverickDanger.

MaverickDanger · 14/07/2021 10:46

Rae is a bit nicknamey and seems like a “DP came up with the name cos he loves Star Wars”.

With Drew, I’d think you named her after Drew Barrymore.

Lots of unisex/boys names for girls if that’s your style:

Blake
Stevie
Billie
Bobbie
Rowan
Micah

MindyStClaire · 14/07/2021 10:41

I think Rae is starting to become of a bit of a filler middle name based on threads on here - probably an evolution from May/Mae/Mai.

Pinknoise · 14/07/2021 10:40

Not keen on either sorry but definitely not Rae.

TwinsAndTrifle · 14/07/2021 10:40

Rae will spend her life correcting "Ray"

GAW19 · 14/07/2021 10:37

Rae was actually a top contender for DD2, DP wasn't sold on it so we called her Maisie-Ray instead Smile

Amandasummers · 14/07/2021 10:35

I like drew and prefer it to rae!

FatJan · 14/07/2021 10:33

I like DD1 (Dee-Dee One) as it is - very Star Wars

moosel · 14/07/2021 10:31

I'm in the UK, my youngest DD middle name is Rea (Jessie Rae), I love the name Rae but wouldn't work with the surname for us. I dont think either are "Boys" names. Drews lovely too.

Crunchyorsmooth · 14/07/2021 10:23

I watched Despicable Me 3 the other day and Gru’s twin brother is Dru, so I thought of that! I do like Drew on Drew Barrymore though. Rae is lovely - I’ve heard it used as a middle name quite recently.

MerryChristmasToYou · 14/07/2021 10:22

Rae is a surname, as is Drew.

Neither are great as a first or middle name. Drew is the better of the two but Rae especially as a middle name is awful.

daisypond · 14/07/2021 10:21

Not for me. Unless shortened for something such as Rachel. Drew I’d assume was short for Andrew. Although I suppose there is Drew Barrymore.

drpet49 · 14/07/2021 10:20

Hate Rae

AnnaSW1 · 14/07/2021 10:19

Rae has become one of those default middle names here. Like Rose used to be.

HoldingTheDoor · 14/07/2021 10:14

They're both bad. I hate the sound of Rae. Drew is slightly better but not by much. I think of it a boys name.

Kanaloa · 14/07/2021 10:11

They’re both ok. I like Rae as short for Rachel/Reina but I’m not keen by itself. Drew is fine, not my taste but fine. I think because of Drew Barrymore and the fact that it’s not very popular generally it works okay for a girl.

StevieNix · 14/07/2021 10:01

I really like both but slightly prefer Rae.
I wanted to use Aurelia with nickname Rae for dc1 but he was a boy Grin

MrsPsmalls · 14/07/2021 09:58

My friend (50s) is Raella which I always thought was pretty.

stormelf · 14/07/2021 09:48

I like them both. I prefer Rae but that's because it is a shortening I use for my daughter's name (different spelling though)

Rainbowqueeen · 14/07/2021 09:39

Like Rae but not Drew
