Hi! I’m a 3rd year English Lit student writing (my first!!) play.
Which of these names is poshest? And if none, what are posh girls names please?

Claudia
Calliope
Beatrice

Would have made a good mumsnet post. AIBU. MIL insisting we pick Beatrice but I want Annabel!

headintheproverbial · 14/07/2021 11:05

I've always thought Verity was terribly posh

SeaPinks · 14/07/2021 11:04

Sorry just checked and it was Annabel the Queen supposedly wasn't keen on

I read the other day that Princess Beatrice was originally going to be called Arabella but the Queen thought it too "yuppie" so she was named Beatrice.

kezziethegingercat · 14/07/2021 10:00

I met an extremely posh lady the other day called Hermione.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 14/07/2021 07:24

Cressida is the head of the Metropolitan Police, so probably not the best choice.

burritofan · 14/07/2021 07:17

Poshest girl I know is called Minty (nickname for Araminta). Agree it’s all about the nicknames.

PearlNextDoor · 14/07/2021 07:12

Thing is Calypso could be that Camomile Lawn type, or it could just as easily be the child of two parents who are the walking embodiment of the next cstalogue, work in a bank, and just picked a fancy name for their child. Id bet on the latter.

@Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo

I think Calliope is more pretentious sounding than posh. Plus agree with pp that it will be jarring if the reader is wondering how to say it.
I agree, it is definitely NOT a name any of my 'posh' friends have/would use. V pretentious. There will never be a Princess Calliope.......

I encounter some fairly uc people through work and they are all Alexandra, Hannah, Emma, Annabel, Frances. Although I do know two women named Fenella, both horsey.

Calypso is the name of an extremely posh character in The Chamomile Lawn.

Unless it’s a comedy I would go with something like Anna, Elizabeth, something traditional like that. If being posh is an important character point it will come across clearly in the writing anyway.

@gettingusedtothelimelight

So how do you pronounce Calliope?

I've never heard of it so would say

Call e oh pea

Anywhere near?

AlohaMolly · 13/07/2021 23:14

I think Lettice is a name in its own right, I’m sure our darling Prime Minister has a daughter called Lettice.

I nominate Lettice, nn Bergy (iceberg lettuce) OP.

Bumpsadaisie · 13/07/2021 23:13

Really posh girls are called things like Charlotte but nickname is Fizzy. Or Victoria but nickname Binky.

OldTinHat · 13/07/2021 23:09

Lettice is short for Alicia I think?

TheTallOakTrees · 13/07/2021 23:06

I love this thread!!
I am not posh but my DDs name is here several times, along with my friends DDs names!
And my niece has one of the suggested nicknames but that's because of an inability to say her name properly when she was really small and it just stuck!!

Bryonyshcmyony · 13/07/2021 22:20

Pigs
Florrie
Tiggy
Boo
Rara

Are all nicknames used by girls at my dds very posh school

MichelleScarn · 13/07/2021 22:17

@AngelicaElizaAndPeggy

There's a posh woman who does Instagram stories whose daughter is called Calypso. I think that sounds quite posh, in a kind of West London Amanda from Motherland kind of way.
Makes me think of the ice lolly. Wouldn't see as 'posh at all!
MichelleScarn · 13/07/2021 22:16

Girls I knew at school had nn like Bags, Tals, Flic

Most nothing like their names!

Look at the girls in Made in Chelsea or Tatler - it's all about being named Alexandra but known as Binky, or similar.
