Hi! I’m a 3rd year English Lit student writing (my first!!) play.
Which of these names is poshest? And if none, what are posh girls names please?

They are all pretty posh. Calliope would be the poshest.

Posh girls who I know: (I live in a pretty posh area although I am not posh)
Persephone, Araminta, Callista, Delilah, Harriet, Georgiana, Penelope,
Posh can also be quite normal too:
Lottie, Lucie, etc

BiscuitLover09876 · 16/07/2021 13:50

Ottilie or Camilla

But out of those, probably Beatrice

DefinitelyNotAHastyNameChange · 15/07/2021 23:30

Am I the only one that thinks of a steam organ when they hear ‘Calliope’? The poshest kids I know are twins called Casper and Clover and their little brother who is called Ted. I think traditionally ‘try hard’ posh names like Araminta and Tarquin have been replaced by much more normal names among the real posho’s. It’s all dentists kids who are given those names.

Tor, for Victoria

ScrambledSmegs · 15/07/2021 23:26

Poshest girl I ever met as a child was called Bunty (she was an Hon. I think). I found it hilarious because of the now-defunct magazine for girls. I was a twat as a kid.

FYI famous (to history nerds) Lettice - Lettice Knollys married Robert Dudley; Elizabeth 1's favourite, which mightily annoyed the queen. She had multiple children and grandchildren, and died at the age of 91, bloody good going for an Elizabethan!

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 15/07/2021 23:18

Callista
Georgiana
Verity
Felicity

amission · 15/07/2021 23:15

MrsRockAndRoll · 15/07/2021 23:14

@Sittinginthesand

How old is your character, when is the play set and is she town posh, country posh, rich and posh or poor and posh? What are her parents like?
Yes, exactly!
gogohm · 15/07/2021 22:57

The poshest person I know (dad was a hereditary peer, Earl) is called Sarah

irresistibleoverwhelm · 15/07/2021 22:56

@Nohomemadecandles

Calliope is Greys Anatomy to me. (Call-eye-oh-pea)

I think normal names- Lucy, Kate, Helena, Rosalind, Victoria etc. Classics.

The daft names have become copycat I think - the Arabellas, Aramintas etc

Not always! There are different breeds of posh. Your Dragon School/Oxbridge eccentric parents/Pimlico types are not the same as the ponies-in-Wiltshire type set, for example; or the London Media Posh. Lots of key differences!

Bryonyshcmyony · 15/07/2021 22:33

Minty always reminds me of Minty Badger from horrible histories

irresistibleoverwhelm · 15/07/2021 22:32

I’ve currently got an Araminta from St Paul’s Girls with a pretty impressive pedigree. Known as Minty!

00100001 · 15/07/2021 22:29

Technically some of the poshest women have everyday names: her maj and co ( well, those born into the family) are: Elizabeth, Anne, Margaret, Zara, Charlotte, Louise, Beatrice, Eugenie etc. All fairly ordinary names.

The Aramintas and Xylophones of the world are wannabe posh.

MrPickles73 · 15/07/2021 22:27

Calliope sounds like a type of melon...

stupidstupider · 15/07/2021 22:24

Tango
Bunny
Bear
Sally

NiceGerbil · 15/07/2021 22:20

Octavia
Charlie for Charlotte

NiceGerbil · 15/07/2021 22:19

How old is the character?

That makes a difference

BikeRunSki · 15/07/2021 22:19

@Cazzovuoi

Lettuce?! Is that a typo? Grin
Letice - girls’s name
NiceGerbil · 15/07/2021 22:18

What about a posh style nickname?

Kitty came into my head for some reason!

NiceGerbil · 15/07/2021 22:18

Beatrice
Not Claudia
Don't use the middle one you need something more well known!

irresistibleoverwhelm · 15/07/2021 22:16

Oh yes and also known as Minty, Moll, Cressie, Nell, Katy and so on for short!

irresistibleoverwhelm · 15/07/2021 22:14

I know a Thirza. She was a super posh old school librarian. Wonder if it’s the same person!

I work with the Young Posh on a regular basis, and I can confirm that my current Most Poshos are called:

Araminta
Molly
Annabel
Lucy
Alice
Cressida (Cressie)
Eleanor
Catherine
