Don't do it, it's so boring and overused! And Izzy is even worse

Onewomanbadtan · 19/07/2021 17:56

I know loads of them right across the lifespan. Such an elegant timeless name.

MrsJones92 · 19/07/2021 17:53

I work with children and have come across lots of Isabelle/Isabellas but if you love it don't let popularity put you off!

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 11/07/2021 14:35

There are lots of derivations that are incredibly popular. I work in a school and although I have the names of the 4-5 similarly named girls in our year down, I admit I sometimes a struggle to remember whether it's Isabel, Isobel, Isabelle, Isabella or Izzy I'm dealing with.

Peccary · 11/07/2021 14:24

DD has Isobel, Isabelle and Isabella in her pre school class but there seem to be fewer in the younger nursery groups

rooarsome · 11/07/2021 14:20

Very popular. Sadly vetoed by my husband as apparently a girl in his niece's class gets called Isabelle-end

Terrazzo · 11/07/2021 14:14

Obviously statistically yes very popular.

Terrazzo · 11/07/2021 14:13

In my real life, no, don’t know any across DS’s classes (2 school classes, 2 nursery classes)

custardbear · 11/07/2021 13:55

Yes we know loads too I'm afraid

wishiwasbytheseaside · 11/07/2021 13:42

Very popular. My eldest is 13 and there is at least one in every year group from her age down. Sometime multiple isabelles.
It is still a lovely name.

Chilldonaldchill · 11/07/2021 11:14

If you add up all the different spellings - yes it's super popular.
My 17 year old had 4 in her class (with total of 14 girls) throughout primary school. It's the second most popular name in her year group at secondary school. We also knew lots of others a similar age.
It's probably a bit less popular now - but still very popular!

KirstenBlest · 11/07/2021 10:30

names.darkgreener.com/#isabelle

If you add the Isabels. Isabelles, Isabellas. Isobels all together, it is very popular.

Another name that is likely to be on a downward trend so she is likely to be a younger person with the name.

JazzerMcCreary · 11/07/2021 10:26

It’s lovely (I like the Isabel spelling myself) but if the popularity bothers you you could try:
Arabelle/a
Isadora
Elizabelle/a
Imelda

Viviennemary · 11/07/2021 10:18

Its a really nice name. Go for it if you like it.

Kanaloa · 11/07/2021 10:17

It’s quite popular, especially if you think of the similar Isabella/Bella which will add to its popularity ‘feel.’ However, there’s a reason it’s popular, it’s a beautiful name.

Pinknoise · 11/07/2021 10:16

I love it and I know it’s popular but I have never known a single one and I’m a teacher of 25 years. None of my dc’s friends either.

CaffiSaliMali · 11/07/2021 10:15

For what it's worth I am the type to avoid a popular name for something a bit more unusual (I have an unusual name myself) but Isabel - which I have loved since I was very small - is the exception I would make to that rule if there wasn't already an Izzy in the family.

It is a lovely name.

CaffiSaliMali · 11/07/2021 10:12

In E&W:
Isabella is the 6th most popular girls name
Isabelle is the 28th most popular girls name
Isabel is the 142nd most popular girls name
Isobel is the 151st most popular girls name

It's a popular name because it's lovely though and it's a very old, classic name derived from the same Hebrew roots as Elizabeth.

If you look at the darkgreener site both Isabelle and Isabel peaked a few years ago and are now falling in popularity.

MadeOfStarStuff · 11/07/2021 09:18

It’s been incredibly popular for years, especially if you include the various spellings and Isabella.

It’s popular because it’s a lovely name but your child is likely to meet lots of others,

AliasGrape · 11/07/2021 08:30

It’s not the worst thing to have a popular name though surely?

There were about 7 or 8 other girls with my name in my year at high school (none at primary) and I don’t think I’ve ever worked anywhere I haven’t come across at least one other. It’s really never done me me any harm and it’s a lovely name. Even the MOST popular names aren’t as ubiquitous as back then when everyone was called one of about 10 options it seemed.

That said, I’m an Early Years teacher and have taught many many Isabellas over the last few years, peaking about 5 years ago when there were 4 in my class all going by a different nickname version. I haven’t actually taught an Isabelle yet though - nor an Isobel which is my preferred spelling.

Skool · 11/07/2021 08:23

Soooooo popular

NannyR · 11/07/2021 08:22

It's popular for a good reason - it's a lovely, timeless name. Just because it's commonly used it doesn't automatically mean that she will be one of three in her class - I look after three children and there are no Isabelle/Isobel/Isabellas in any of their year groups whereas there are multiples of much more unusual names.

toastofthetown · 11/07/2021 08:14

Isabelle was the 28th most popular name in England and Wales at the last count. Adding up all the spellings makes it the tenth most popular name and adding in Isabella makes the most popular name of 2019. That’s a very popular name, and although it has slightly reduced in popular meaning that she might not have another Isabelle in her class, in the world of work she will likely be amongst the older Isabelles she avoided at school.

@AuntieStella the ONS data for England and Wales is usually released at the end of August so not too long now Smile

Cloudninenine · 11/07/2021 05:00

It is popular but it’s so lovely - I would just use it and not worry about the popularity!

FlumpyPoodle · 11/07/2021 04:57

Very popular and has been for the past 15 years.
