Thoughts?

Not made it up, it's from the bible. How would you pronounce it?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I know a teenage D'amaris and it's a beautiful name - on him! Family are from the Carribean and I can't imagine it being not completely weird on another child. Ending is "ee".

VenusClapTrap · 10/07/2021 19:14

Beautiful name. Emphasis on MAR.

SBAM · 10/07/2021 19:20

I’ve never met a Damaris but I know of an Amaris so I’d pronounce it the same but with a D at the front Blush Dam-a-ris

Moonsick · 10/07/2021 19:28

I like it, are you aware of the song by Patrick Wolf?

It's a gorgeous name. I'd say Dam-a-riss, but the other pronunciation is nice too. Probably one of the nicest names I've seen on here.

yikesanotherbooboo · 10/07/2021 19:38

Da mar iss, it's a name I'm aware of but I'm not sure that I have met one.
It's a bit 'look at me' imo.
It that is what you are aiming for it is ok.

There is a C17th philosopher, Damaris Masham, who was a friend of John Locke's. I have always loved it!

Makes me think of the lingerie brand which specialised in posh knickers which laced up at the back. Or bows! But I think they went out of business. A shame as their diffusion line was Mimi Holliday which I liked for doing a good range of bigger cup sizes.

Sounds like a Turkish holiday resort.

MrsBertBibby · 11/07/2021 23:11

I know one, a lovely woman and a great gardener. Really good name.

DAMmeriss.

Okbutnotgreat · 12/07/2021 07:42

It was DM’s favourite when she was pregnant with me (a long time ago) but was vetoed by DDad. It’s striking and unusual whilst not being daft. I didn’t realise it was biblical.

kezziethegingercat · 12/07/2021 08:06

I know one in her 50s. I usually love a biblical name but not a big fan of this one.

Marcipex · 12/07/2021 11:41

I’d guess at Day-MAR-is but I see I’m in the minority.
If it’s pronounced Dam- then I wouldn’t use it.
Samaris might be better.

emmathedilemma · 12/07/2021 12:26

I'm thinking Greek or Turkish holiday resort Grin
We had a lovely week at the Hotel Damaris, food was great and the staff were very helpful.....

Very popular name in Parish records up until Victorian times when it seemed to almost die out.
I’d pronounce it D’ma-ris (with the a as a schwa or as in a cat rather than A cat, if you see what I mean.)
