Thoughts on Clove as a girls name, there is one in Hunger games, and i think Clover is used sometimes now.

Nooooooo
Clover ok

Classica · 09/07/2021 18:59

Clove is a spice I don't think it works as a name. And I don't think it works in an apple tart either, although some people insist in popping them in there.

Herbs work better as names, like Sage or Sorrell.

Ellmau · 09/07/2021 18:56

Too garlicky.

I do like Clover though.

CornedBeef451 · 09/07/2021 11:41

I like it! I might double check with my DCs if they said they had a new friend called Clove, like the whole "it's Sharon Mommy!" thread a few weeks ago but other than that I wouldn't think twice about it.

PattyPan · 09/07/2021 11:33

Clove is not a name, it’s an ingredient in mulled wine Grin
I have met a Clover but I don’t think it’s a good name, cow/margarine associations

Chilldonaldchill · 09/07/2021 08:38

I absolutely love Clover (from What Katy Did) but don't like Clove as the given name.

miltonj · 09/07/2021 08:32

Don't like clove at all. Not keen on clover. 'We all love clover, all over this land'?. I know all names have some kind of association but clove if garlic is a very obvious one.

How about Cleo or Chloe?

Buttons294749 · 09/07/2021 08:24

I almost used clover as I love what Katy did so much but was out off by the butter

Musmerian · 09/07/2021 08:21

Clover is the sister in The What Katy Did books! Cute and quirky. Clove is not great.

Doublestar · 09/07/2021 08:21

Cloven hoof
Put on your cloves (clothes)
Clove the door

This is what she'll have to put up with so I wouldn't no.

FindingMeno · 09/07/2021 08:18

I quite like it but it sounds like it won't stand up in use.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 09/07/2021 08:17

Clover is a mouse in Brambly Hedge Smile

DinosaurDiana · 09/07/2021 08:17

Clove reminds me of camel toe - so no.

NoSquirrels · 09/07/2021 08:16

Clover- yes.
Clodagh -yes.
Clove - no.

KirstenBlest · 09/07/2021 08:16

Clove Oil is used for toothache. Not the best association.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/07/2021 08:07

Really don't like the idea of Clove as a first name, for either sex. It makes me think of garlic or toothache or cloven hooves.

There's an old name Clovis which was a boys' name but would work for girls nowadays. It was a Frankish (early French/German) form of Louis.

ILoveStickers · 09/07/2021 07:31

Yes, Clove in the Hunger Games is a baddie really...

Dozer · 09/07/2021 07:06

Well, to be fair, she was a child trying to survive in a horrible society and competition to the death.

Dozer · 09/07/2021 07:05

Cloves (fhe spice) are v strong and most people dislike them.

The Clove in Hunger Games was a murderous queen bee!

Zerogravity · 09/07/2021 07:00

If you want a herb/spice name there are plenty that actually work: Sage, Rosemary, Basil, Juniper - I even know a Pepper. Clove - no.

sarah13xx · 09/07/2021 06:53

I know a girl called Clove! I’ve always thought it’s such a beautiful name, it’s a bit like Chloe but more unusual

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/07/2021 02:16

Clover is really lovely if you can get past the butter brand (I'd be slightly wary of "spreads easily" jokes from teenage boys). Clove just sounds very hippyish to me (makes me think of clove cigarettes) and isn't quite as nice a sound imo.

How about Sage instead? I suppose there are possible stuffing jokes but it has a nicer sound to me and is a bit more well used than Clove (16 girls and 9 boys last year) and also has an lovely obvious Latin meaning ( "wise" since we still use the same word in English).

NuffSaidSam · 08/07/2021 23:49

'Clover was Katy Carr’s sister, maybe that’s why I love it, read that so much as a kid'

That's what Clover makes me think of too. Loved Clover in that book. I do think it's been ruined by the butter though!

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 08/07/2021 23:47

Of garlic?

NeepNeepNeep · 08/07/2021 23:47

People will tease and call her a cow/margarine. Just because it's in a book doesn't mean it's good.
