TTC and thinking of names. I'm trying to narrow them down by thinking about whether I'd like to be called it or not and would like to know what others think. Also if youd have any preconceptions about people with this name.

Blair
Blythe
Primrose
Rosamund
Pandora
Perdita
Petronella

Boy's name settled on already. Robert.

Love Perdita and Rosamund

NotNowPlzz · 07/07/2021 20:01

@Perdiesmum you have fantastic taste Wink

We were looking at the Per-di-ta pronunciation as the correct one. Perdie is gorgeous.

My DD has an ancient classical name with a more modern occurrence so I'm not bothered re Pandora and Perdita being a jewellery brand and disney name respectively. They're both old beautiful names.

And why does the lucky DS get a perfectly charming name Confused

Divineswirls · 07/07/2021 13:21

I physically winced when I read out your list of names so I guess that means I don't think any of them are suitable.

Mischance · 07/07/2021 13:02

Rosamund

Pemba · 07/07/2021 13:00

Rosamund is the only one I'd consider. It's nice, although I slightly prefer Rosalind.

Blair is the worst, too American, too masculine, memories of Tony, bleurgh
sound. Just no.

All the others have nice elements but problematic associations. Primrose prissy, Perdita meaning 'lost', Pandora too 'Adrian Mole', plus jewellery and 'box', Petronella too princessy. Etc, etc.

Perdiesmum · 07/07/2021 12:59

Have name changed for obvious reasons. We have very similar taste in names.

I have two DD.
One has the first name Perdita (known as Perdie) and the other is Theodora with Blythe as one of her middle names.
Pandora was also on my list (but my husband didn't like it).

We weren't put off by the Dalmatian / Jill Cooper references. If people don't know that Shakespeare invented the name and 101 Dalmatians is their only reference, then so be it. I know some people struggle with the meaning but Perdita was a charming, beautiful lost princess in The Winter's Tale who got her happy ending. I'm content with that.
It's traditionally pronounced Per-di-ta, rather than Per-dee-ta, in the UK. Lots of people get it wrong though.

I'm very happy to 'meet' another Perdita on this thread though @Yellowmoons! My daughter will be thrilled!

HonorHiding · 07/07/2021 12:41

Only Rosamund, really, for me. Blythe at a push.

IsThePopeCatholic · 07/07/2021 12:30

Of those, I only like Rosamund.

BunnyRuddington · 07/07/2021 12:18

Please not Pandora. I know one that was born recently and it got a lot of Hmmfaces.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 07/07/2021 11:37

I don't like Blair.

The others are all nice, Blythe especially so if she's born on a Sunday.

Marguerite2000 · 07/07/2021 11:31

I wouldn't really want to be called any of those names.

Estherlee · 07/07/2021 11:06

Perdita means 'lost' in Spanish

DaisyWaldron · 07/07/2021 11:05

I would like Rosamund or Perdita. I would be fine but less enthusiastic about Primrose. Pandora is probably actually very nice for younger people who don't remember Adrian Mole. And the same with Petronella Wyatt.

Blair and Bythe both sound too American, which I'm not.

Estherlee · 07/07/2021 11:04

The only one I wouldn't mind being called would be Blythe

Would prefer Rosa though (without the mund ending)

CoffeeBeansGalore · 07/07/2021 11:02

Petronella - petroleum jelly - vaseline. No. Petra is better but more of a dog's name (Blue Peter).

Primrose - pretty flower but brings to mind busybody, almost Hyacinth Bucket type.

Perdita - Jilly Cooper & then the dalmation, but actually like it. Alternative Peri? (Peri Gilpin is an American actress).

Rosamund - not keen. Rosa, Rose, Rosalie prettier in the same vein.

Blair - boy's name. Blair Witch, Tony Blair (slight ick).

Blythe - ok, bit wishy washy.

Pandora - instantly thought Adrian Mole as a pp above!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 07/07/2021 10:59

Blair - Witch. No.

Blythe - unusual but classy. Good call.

Primrose - Harold Shipman's wife. Hard no.

Rosamund - Lovely, and Rosie/Ross are cute nn

Pandora - I like this a LOT.

Perdita - Reminds me of the Jilly Cooper antiheroine, but that's not a bad thing. Great name

Petronella -

campion · 07/07/2021 10:52

Rosamund is ok but prefer other ' Rosa' type names eg Rosanna

None of the others. Primrose just says Dr Shipman's wife to me. She couldn't help that but still.
Petronella Wyatt one of Johnson's many bits on the side.

WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly · 07/07/2021 10:43

The only one I like and would like to be called is Rosamund.

I particularly dislike Blythe.

DoucheCanoe · 07/07/2021 10:39

I wouldn't mind being a Blair.

The rest are way too frilly for me!

Frannibananni · 07/07/2021 10:30

Anything but pandora. All the box jokes as a teenager would be cruel.

KirstenBlest · 07/07/2021 10:28

Blair - horrible
Blythe - sounds like a grim northern town
Primrose - prim
Rosamund - ok
Pandora - cheap-looking jewellery
Perdita - ok
Petronella - why aye pet. No

sarah13xx · 07/07/2021 08:56

Blair and Blythe I love, either for boys or girls

Chilldonaldchill · 07/07/2021 07:53

Blair - really don't like this for a girl but then I don't like surname-type names. I would assume Blair's brother would be Jackson rather than Robert
Blythe - I do love this (mainly because if AoGG) and I just think it sounds great
Primrose - not keen. I think it's the "prim" at the start. It sounds prissy.
Rosamund - I do like this but would you say "ROSE - a - mund" or "ROS - a - mund". I say the former and it would really annoy me if people said the second.
Pandora - this ages me but I do think of Adrian Mole. In itself it's a nice name though
Perdita - I've never liked this. I'm not sure why. It just has a very unattractive sound to me
Petronella - no. Too frilly, too big a name. Petra is much nicer.

Blythe or Rosamund for me.

AbsolutelyYes · 07/07/2021 06:36

Don't like any of those to be honest.

Blair and I think of the hideous Tony

Petronella sounds like an insect repellent and Pandora is the jewellery brand.
