Struggling for boy names. Found one but the meaning is crap!

We don't know yet if having a boy or girl but we settled on a lovely girls name super quickly. So I suggested Cameron for a boy and DH quite likes it.
I then researched the meaning and it means "bent, crooked" lol
So now I feel that's a bit shit considering our first DS is Arthur and means bear, courageous and also the connotations with King Arthur etc.
Name meanings mean something to me.
I'm so torn because it's the only name we've both been quite happy with but then find out it means crooked and bent...hmmm

Middlesboroughgirl · 06/07/2021 00:06

I don't know what my name means or what my children's names mean.

PattyPan · 06/07/2021 00:01

@traumatisednoodle There is a word in German (kühn) which means brave but it’s not the most common word for brave nor is it the more obvious etymology of Cohen. It’s much more commonly a Jewish surname from the Hebrew word for priest (Kohen). I wouldn’t use it unless Jewish.

Horehound · 05/07/2021 22:49

Surely not @happenchance?!
@Ninkanink yes Alfred I like. I'd probably call him Alfie but it is a cute name. But is that too much with an Arthur already?
@Lotsachocolateplease mmm no too biblical although I know I like Benjamin and that's pretty biblical too!
@endofjune yes I said earlier we like Benjamin the only thing is DH has tonnes of Ben friends so he's unsure about it.
@traumatisednoodle Casey and Cohen sound too American too mean and Cedric sounds too English.

Jeez I'm so fussy!

@lulubon yes I know what you mean. My Arthur is the same. But still... I would be sad about the crooked nose meaning for Cameron.

Lulubon · 05/07/2021 21:26

My son is called Arthur

His name means so much to me because he became his name, to me Arthur means the kindest, sweetest baby boy in the whole world. It won’t matter what their names ‘means’ once they are born, they make their own meanings and it’s a beautiful name- but maybe ive bias 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

traumatisednoodle · 05/07/2021 21:06

I found these
I like Cohen.

Benjamin has a lovely meaning and goes well with Arthur if it’s to your taste?

Lotsachocolateplease · 05/07/2021 20:59

Isaac? It means laughter.
I think it goes really well with Arthur too

Ninkanink · 05/07/2021 19:26

What about Alfred?

Happenchance · 05/07/2021 19:25

Yeh I think Arthur and Cameron go well together too. Cameron is quite similar to Camelot, so he may get called that.

Horehound · 05/07/2021 17:18

Yeh I think Arthur and Cameron go well together too.
DH likes Albert but i think because we have Arthur, it's just a bit...much?
Callum could probably grow on me, not sure about DH I'll have to test it later. @roarfeckingroarr we have both said George before and it is my grandads name so would be a nice nod to him but for some reason I seem to have second thoughts about it now. And yeh farmer...hmm
Not sure!

I was going to suggest Campbell as an alternative but I find it means "crooked mouth"!

Cameron is a lovely name but I understand your reservations. My name means "princess" which has always deeply annoyed me, and I'm avoiding Rosalind for dd for similar reasons.

PattyPan · 05/07/2021 16:10

I totally understand OP, Pippa would be my first choice for a girl but Philippa means lover of horses and I don’t like horses so feel weird about using it. What about Christopher, Isaac, Asher, Nicholas or other c names Callum, Conrad, Caleb?

roarfeckingroarr · 05/07/2021 15:37

We have an Arthur bear too. If we have another son he will probably be George or Alexander, although through this thread I've found out George means farmer. Alexander means defender of men, so I hope I don't breed a MRA 😁

toffeebutterpopcorn · 05/07/2021 15:28

Kamran means ‘successful’ or ‘lucky’

Chanticleer · 05/07/2021 15:23

Cameron has a regal edge to it, what with being an old clan name. I think it goes really well with Arthur. And Cameron would have his own tartan 😆

EssentialHummus · 05/07/2021 15:20

I really like the name Cameron - my association to it is an incredibly gifted, brave South African jurist, Edwin Cameron. Though I appreciate that’s a bit niche!

These things are so subjective. If the meaning of the name is insurmountable for you then unfortunately there’s little to be done.

Horehound · 05/07/2021 15:14

I like Oscar and could maybe get DH on board with that.
Our last name is tricky to get a good flowing first name. It's only one syllable so I think the first name need to be two syllables at least.

The David Cameron thing is funny, my brain goes straight to Cameron Diaz.
What about something else old fashioned
Chester
Clifford
Charles
Clarence
Clyde

Milton
Percy
Walter
Edmund
Mortimer
Oscar
Ralph
Albert

I think it’s fine to be put off by the meaning of a name. It’s not much different than being put off because you encountered someone with that name. I can’t remember which name it was now but I’ve definitely moved on from a name because of the meaning.

I’m also obviously place marking so I can read through your boys list to see if any jump out at me. I’ve fallen out of love with my boys name and we won’t finding out the sex so I need to find one just in case.

LadyDanburysHat · 05/07/2021 14:57

It has made me laugh that the name is Cameron. We nearly named DS1 this but went with something else for entirely different reasons. But as soon as I saw your title it reminded me of Cameron. It's a great name, don't let it put you off.

junebirthdaygirl · 05/07/2021 14:53

Tobias and Jonathan both mean gift and both lovely names, l think!!

Horehound · 05/07/2021 14:50

The only other name we both were happy with for a while was Benjamin but DH has quite a lot of Ben friends he wasn't 100% about it.

OP posts:
Horehound · 05/07/2021 14:48

@Ariela that's far too outlandish for my husband lol

@villamariavintrapp I have a friend called Cameron and he is the most lovely person ever that I am not even thinking of "famous" Cameron's but David Cameron certainly lived up to the meaning lol

OP posts:
villamariavintrapp · 05/07/2021 14:45

I think Cameron means 'crooked nose' so trying to spin it into a more positive 'bendy' meaning doesn't quite work.. which doesn't matter if the meaning of a name doesn't really matter to you, but if it does then it does. It would also still be quite closely linked to David Cameron.. which would put me off a lot more.

Ariela · 05/07/2021 14:45

Lowen is a nice name I heard recently
