Winter as a first name for a girl. What are your thoughts?

Also, do you think as the season spelling 'Winter' or with a y 'Wynter'?

I'm on the fence
She needs a much nicer middle name she can use
It's more of a surname and I hate kids being given surnames as first names

Chilldonaldchill · 03/07/2021 22:53

@Evenstar

I love it, Winter is the heroine in one of my favourite books Shadow of the Moon by M M Kaye, who wrote The Far Pavilions
I love that book too. I was going to say that I think that's why I love the name and why I see it as elegant and classy.

I absolutely love it! Winter is favourite season and I think it's a beautiful name

Gazingoutthewindow · 03/07/2021 21:48

Absolutely love it! With an I not y though.

Nicer than Summer which is a bit naff

NigellaSeed · 03/07/2021 21:45

Winter is a beautiful name imo - but don't like the Y

MrsSchadenfreude · 03/07/2021 21:41

DD had a (male) friend called Winter. Unfortunately his surname was an item of clothing (think along the lines of Winter Coate) which caused much hilarity amongst his class mates.

MrsBungle · 03/07/2021 21:39

I love the name Winter. It’s my favourite season too.

squirrelnutkins1 · 03/07/2021 21:36

Beautiful.... but please spell it with an i!

Thefaceofboe · 03/07/2021 21:23

Looks like an unpopular opinion but I love it. Winter is also my favourite season, it’s Christmas and is always such a happy time for me. When are you due? Smile

grapewine · 03/07/2021 18:21

Eira is snow in Welsh if you like cold theme names.

That's beautiful.

All I can think of is 'Winter is coming - but when she grows up it probably won't be an issue. Definitely not Wynter though.

FayeFayeFayeFayeFaye · 03/07/2021 18:21

I think it’s lovely. I know a Winter.

I really don’t like it when it’s paired with Rose and hyphenated. Awful.

KirstenBlest · 03/07/2021 18:17

Bleak and dreary.

Pieceofpurplesky · 03/07/2021 12:35

Winter Anderson. American Horror Story.

Other than that I like it as a name. It's a bit emo/goth and would suit a moody teen

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/07/2021 12:31

I like it.

You should consider the possibility of Win or Winnie though, and if you hate those, don’t use it.

GoldenSun1 · 03/07/2021 12:26

I think it is a lovely name and not overused like Summer. I personally prefer Winter as a season – walks in the snow, robins in the garden, hot chocolate and mulled wine. Summer to me is just the gross smell of fake tan, blokes getting their beer bellies out at the beach and rainy BBQs. It's all just personal opinion. And the best is that after being introduced to a person with the name Winter once (or other seasonal name) you will associate the name with the person in that context and not think of the seasonal imagery, either good or bad.

MaMelon · 03/07/2021 11:37

Winter in the UK is typically sleet, rain, long dark nights, central heating, scraping ice off the car, being stuck in commuter traffic jams because the roads are bad, freezing cold, slushy snow…the crisp, cold days with hot chocolate and fluffy blankets are few and far between.

Don’t do it OP! And definitely don’t do it with a Y.

Palmatree · 03/07/2021 11:31

I think it's fine, but definitely spell it with an 'I' not a 'Y'. Honestly, I don't see how it's any more ridiculous than calling your child Autumn, Wren, Juniper etc. I actually much prefer it to Summer, which I always think sounds a bit twee. In fact the more I think about it, the more I like Winter as a name. I also love pp suggestion of Eira, which sadly my DH vetoed.

Aozora13 · 03/07/2021 11:05

Love it! Was on my list for DD3 but she’s due in September so decided against it.

HeronLanyon · 03/07/2021 09:20

Winter is my second fave season and even I think I wouldn’t want to be named this. Society doesn’t see it as a positive time and those feelings run deep.
Wynter - if I met and adult wynter I would kind of think parents were likely to have been ‘free spirits’ ‘new age’ ‘alternative’ types with possible commune/community living going on AND who assumed their daughter would be too. It’s that last bit which would make this an absolute no from me. She may not be ‘alternative’ at all (and possibly nor are you)

decoratedstandardlamp · 03/07/2021 09:19

I like it as long as the child is born in winter.

Eira is snow in Welsh if you like cold theme names.

MyFloorIsLava · 03/07/2021 09:16

I'm surprised to find that I quite like it.

I know an adult called Spring. First one I'd met, even though there are loads of Summers and Autumns.

ConstantlyIrksome · 03/07/2021 09:13

I know a Winter. It's a lovely name and really suits her. I don't think it's gloomy at all, I think it's quite elegant actually and perfect for a Dec/Jan baby

BumBurnerBum · 03/07/2021 08:50

It's a pretty name but... OP you know it's a Baddie name don't you?

Chilldonaldchill · 03/07/2021 08:47

I really like it.
I'm a classical name person generally but I think Winter is really lovely. I can't bear Summer or Autumn though!
