Shortening of Lorelei?

margarita100 · 30/06/2021 12:26

Expecting DD1 in October. We really like the name Lorelei. I'm aware of the meaning/history and actually have German heritage. Never watched the Gilmore girls but aware there's a character in that, but not put off....

However, we don't like the nickname Lorry. Will it be inevitable that this name is shortened to Lorry? I know nicknames and shortenings can come about organically but does anyone have any suggestions of potential shortenings in place of Lorry? We would use the full name mostly as we find it really beautiful!
I know the Gilmore girl is called Rory but not keen on that
Thank you

It's very uncommon as a name in German-speaking countries - probably more popular in the USA than in Germany due to Gilmore Girls! I would have thought that Lora would be a more likely shortening than Lorry though.
Also, I have to share this because it's what goes through my head every time I hear it:

EvilHerbivore · 01/07/2021 10:35

The one I know goes by 'lorki'

helpmewiththisnew · 01/07/2021 10:32

Lol, Lolly or Ellie assuming your pronouncing as my friend does how has a daughter with this name.

belimoo · 01/07/2021 05:07

Could you use the nn Lori but to rhyme with Rory rather than Lorry? Might not remind you of Lawrie so much then?

Maggiesfarm · 01/07/2021 04:33

I don't like 'Lolly'. Lori is nice (I already said that), or Lor, but people may just call her 'Lorelei'.

hawkehurstgang · 01/07/2021 04:26

Nicknames are Lori or Rory. Maybe choose another name if you dislike both of these.

India999 · 30/06/2021 17:05

I grew up with a girl who shortened it to lolly.

CeaselessWatcher · 30/06/2021 15:36

I would shorten to Lolly because I can't say my Rs properly.

Lori I suppose. hat sounds quite nice.

I have a friend called Lorelei who is a singer! Very appropriate.

It's a lovely name.

movingadviceneeded · 30/06/2021 14:45

I know 2 lorelai's and they are both Lol - by choice!

LittleDidSheKnow · 30/06/2021 14:44

Lori is nice, though. Or Lor, but nicely lengthened (if that makes sense?), like lawr.

Good name though, OP!

safariboot · 30/06/2021 14:42

Laurel, as either the shortening or the actual name.

riotlady · 30/06/2021 14:40

@InglouriousBasterd Christopher just calls her Lor

Foxglovers · 30/06/2021 14:32

I know someone named this who goes by the name ‘Lol’ to everyone

Violetlavenders · 30/06/2021 14:15

Lori or Rory.

Fiddliestofsticks · 30/06/2021 14:11

Doesnot he just say Lore? No a sound at the end. Just Lor.

InglouriousBasterd · 30/06/2021 14:00

@Fiddliestofsticks Christopher pronounces it that way? I suspect it would be Lora if spelled out.

margarita100 · 30/06/2021 13:33

Thanks for your response so far ☺️
Would pronounce it Lor-ell-eye
Yes I assume Lorry would be spelt Lori but wanted to show it phonetically

I'm not opposed to Lori as a stand-alone name, it's just that I know a Lawrence shortened to Lawrie and I don't like him very much 😂 so Lori would remind me of him 😩 maybe it's something I'd get over!

@InglouriousBasterd

Neither of their characters was ever called Laura for short.

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 30/06/2021 12:50

In the Gilmore girls they pronounce the name Laura-lie if this is how you pronounce it then the shorting could be Laura or Laurie rather than Lorry or Lori but if you like something like Lola or Lulu you would have to use that yourself.

JustKeep · 30/06/2021 12:49

The one I know uses lora (like laura).

HotHointheavo · 30/06/2021 12:49

I love Lorelei how about shortened to Loulou?

InglouriousBasterd · 30/06/2021 12:48

Lorelai in GG gets shortened sometimes to Laura, I noticed.

I fancied this name for DD, it’s lovely!
