TatianaBis
I’ve never met anyone who couldn’t pronounce TH

I have. Plenty. Quite obvious if they are talking about Maffew or Feo.

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 01/07/2021 11:47

Much prefer Amelie

TatianaBis · 01/07/2021 11:44

*In this country I mean - the French can’t say Th easily.

TatianaBis · 01/07/2021 11:44

I’ve never met anyone who couldn’t pronounce TH, it’s not like S and R.

Amelie is never pronounced properly in the U.K.

It’s not A muh lee, emphasis on A.

But A mey lee, equal emphasis on each syllable.

So, on that basis, Thea.

Orangemochafrappacino · 01/07/2021 10:16

Thanks all. I'm not too bothered about popularity although I wouldnt want her to be one of 4 in the class so maybe Thea is the way to go!

I love Thea (can have NN Teddy) BUT, If you live anywhere that people routinely say 'F' rather than 'Th' I'd rule it out as Fear isn't ideal. We live near one of those places. Drives me mad.

EJM87 · 30/06/2021 18:54

I know a Athena she calls herself "Thea"
I do prefer Thea over Amelie but that's personal preference

HattieMid2 · 30/06/2021 18:38

My two year old is called Thea - thought we had chosen a really unique name at the time but it has become much more popular! Love it though and really suits her.

Jericha · 30/06/2021 18:28

I adore Thea, pronounced like Theo but ahhh not ohhh. I've only heard it pronounced as Tia though.

HighlandMam1 · 30/06/2021 18:23

I love Thea, it was on my short list! I think it is a lot more unique and won't blend in with all the similar popular names right now.

IsThePopeCatholic · 30/06/2021 18:19

Amelie is French. Is there a connection?

Feilin · 30/06/2021 18:16

My 5 yr old is called Thea. We chose it because it was short and simple . Shes suits it and lots of people always say wow havent heard that before or thats not common! Some of her peers do struggle and she gets Fee-a but she doesnt mind and not do i

LittleBlackCat22 · 30/06/2021 18:14

@Laci3Pound amelie isn’t easy either! My amelie called herself Nannery for years Grin

BoatyMcBoatMom · 30/06/2021 18:12

Thea is lovely but lots of people may not pronounce it with the TH, so will become Fee-a. If that’s an issue then go with Amelie

Pinkypink · 30/06/2021 18:11

Both lovely.
I would go for Thea

Kanaloa · 30/06/2021 16:18

Both gorgeous. I would choose Thea personally just because I love it.

Laci3Pound · 30/06/2021 15:52

Amelie, a lot of small children struggle with the "Th" sound, it could be years before she's able to pronounce Thea correctly.

EssentialHummus · 30/06/2021 15:52

I prefer Amelie because I don’t like the sound of Thea in certain accents when it is pronounced with more of an f sound.

This. I live in London and hear lots of Fee-a, Aaa-fa, Maa-Fa. Bleurgh.

Clickbait · 30/06/2021 15:48

Thea

saraclara · 30/06/2021 15:47

I love Thea. But I live in an area where Th is often pronounced as F. So it doesn't really work!

pinkheather · 30/06/2021 15:42

I love both names equally so I’m not sure which one I would pick. Maybe wait to see when she’s here and then pick which one suits her best.

drpet49 · 30/06/2021 12:48

Thea

bellanotte22 · 30/06/2021 12:33

I know a lot of babies and younger kids named both. So if their popularity bothers you I'd pick something else.

TidyDancer · 30/06/2021 12:22

Thea is lovely. Amelie is nice but very overused in my area (south east). Not sure if that's the same across the board.

KirstenBlest · 30/06/2021 12:17

Neither.

Amelie is getting less popular and peaked years ago, and there are lots of Amelias and similar names.

Thea will have lots of Theos , Theas and Mias in her age group.
