The name Swan for a baby girl AIBU

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
TheSlayer · 29/06/2021 15:38

If you want a name.to signify swans, Odette, pet name dotty, is the heroine of swan lake.
Swan itself will never be a name. Be kind to your kid and don't call them swan. They'll get hissy fit jokes.

ZaZathecat · 29/06/2021 15:26

Sounds ok to me. Loads of other animal and bird names are in use (Fox, Wolf, Bear, Robin, Wren etc.) so why not? Swanne is used in France and has the same sound.

GreyhoundG1rl · 29/06/2021 15:11
@GreyhoundG1rl so bizarre to be that people think taking the piss out of peoples names is ok. Like I don't like greyhounds, you clearly do. Do I care? No.
You didn't say what your name was? Confused.
If it is Peaches or Plum, my deepest commiserations...

Boring stuff coming up:

Swan was not uncommon in Scotland where it was used for both boys and girls. The female form, first recorded in 1620, is likely a modern Scots form of the mediaeval name Swannoc, meaning 'sleeping'. Súanach and Suannoch are Scottish Gaelic forms. It fell out of regular use around 1820, but has had occasional use into the 21st century.

For boys, it derives from the Norse Svein meaning 'swain' or 'boy servant' and was in use from the 1720s till the 1960s, although not very common.

Not a daft choice by any means, but it seems that the uninitiated may mock!

Another888 · 29/06/2021 14:37

Swan is beautiful op, it sounds elegant.

Lots of the crazy-name and the basic-name parents judge each other but the kids couldn't care less.

CafeMochaVodkaValiumLate · 29/06/2021 14:36

@LuluJakey1 you're being pedantic but okay.

LuluJakey1 · 29/06/2021 14:25
@LuluJakey1 exactly the same. Lulu and Jake are (to me) unbelievable boring and shit names. Especially Jake. Each to their own.
But they are not my names or my DCs names.

PattyPan · 29/06/2021 14:17

@GreyhoundG1rl I was guessing the fruit was Cherry or Clementine but really hoping for Gooseberry

BikeRunSki · 29/06/2021 14:17

@sadmummy12345

Why? It's an animal not a humans name
Fox, Bear, Robin, Wren, Jay, Kitty, Leo, Paloma, Tiger….
GreyhoundG1rl · 29/06/2021 14:10

I'm a fruit 😂
Peaches? Or Plum. Both beyond hideous.

KeflavikAirport · 29/06/2021 12:23

It’s used in France for boys and girls. It’s not common but certainly not unheard of.

LuluJakey1 · 29/06/2021 12:15

How about Mary or Anna or Jane - something unusual?

LuluJakey1 · 29/06/2021 12:13

@CafeMochaVodkaValiumLate

I really like it :)

We all have unusual names in my family (my son is an animal name and I'm a fruit) and funnily enough, children don't tend to give a shit what you're called. It's the parents who seem to struggle with something out of the ordinary.

Giraffe and Banana?
IToldYouIWasCummins · 29/06/2021 11:31

Hmmmm

No.

Dove
Merlin
Falcon
Kite
Skylark
Swift

Please can we not give OP terrible suggestions? No one should have to endure having one of these as a name.

Snog · 29/06/2021 11:21

Dove
Piper
Raven
Jay
Linnet
Martin
Merlin
Falcon
Kite
Skylark
Swift
I think looking to the natural world for baby names is a nice idea.

lottiegarbanzo · 29/06/2021 10:58

Yes, definitely don't call your child Duck. (Drake!).

Fistful · 29/06/2021 10:48

Robins are incredibly territorial and aggressive, too, and the red breast is a threat colour, not a cute Christmas card-themed thing. Mind you, duck sex (gang rape, corkscrew penises, toothed vaginas etc) is probably the most disturbing bird sex fact.

lottiegarbanzo · 29/06/2021 10:03

Swans are aggressive, territorial and associated with rape.

Robins though, are massive philanderers. Anyone who thinks they're just cute, friendly little things needs to read about the sex lives of robins.

TatianaBis · 29/06/2021 09:34

@PattyPan

Fox and bear are bloody awful as names though. Bear is cringe enough as a nickname (eg Henry Bear 🤮) let alone a given name.
I agree but be consistent at least.
QuimKardashian · 29/06/2021 09:29

Lol!!
