I didn't know there was any alternative pronunciation - the person I know with this name (in her 70s, English) pronounces it Ee-nez with emphasis on the first syllable.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 27/06/2021 23:30

Inn-Nez

(I would pronounce Eira as Eye-ra though)

Enko · 27/06/2021 23:21

The one I knew (German) said it like Guinnes but without the G sound obviously :)

MrsFin · 27/06/2021 22:12

The Scottish Innes I know is Inn-ess

Livingintheclouds · 27/06/2021 22:03

Inn-ezz

dementedpixie · 27/06/2021 22:00

I'd say In-es

Ohshitiveturnedintomymother · 27/06/2021 21:57

Eee-ness if french, In-nez if Spanish

Ellmau · 27/06/2021 18:37

I would pronounce it Ee-ness.

TheWatersofMarch · 27/06/2021 18:05

Inn-eth

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 27/06/2021 16:34

Inn ess

RuthW · 27/06/2021 16:31

In-ez

Backthewaywecame · 27/06/2021 16:03

I thought it was Inn-ess.

CupOfTPlease · 27/06/2021 16:03

@cheeseislife8

I'd have thought eee-nez personally
Same.
DacwMamYnDwad · 27/06/2021 16:03

@Bababanana

I really like it as eye-nes/nez but don’t want to use a name and then fundamentally say it wrong! I also have this problem with Eira-where I am from in South Wales we say eye-rah but all the posts telling me it’s Ay-rah and we say it wrong where we live has put me off.
Ay-rah isn't quite right. Is sounds just like Ira but the I is replaced by Ey.

If you wanted to say Eira as Ira, go ahead, if you are in S Wales. The name is strangely popular on here, probably due to the popularity of names like Ava, Eva, Isla, Ayla

Ida might be an alternative

@Tinysalmonswimminginastream

The one I know (Spanish) pronounces it In-ez with the emphasis on the 'In'.
In Spain it's pronounced eeNEZ because there's a tilde (accent) on the e: Inés.
Blowingagale · 27/06/2021 16:01

I’d guess at Inn ez

DragonDoor · 27/06/2021 15:59

Inn-ess

dannydyerismydad · 27/06/2021 15:57

DS m has a friend pronounced inn nesh. But she's Portuguese, so I have no idea if her pronunciation is standard or the Portuguese pronunciation.

Theworldisquiethere · 27/06/2021 15:56

The one I’ve met is Inn-ez

stevalnamechanger · 27/06/2021 15:56

Eee-nez

BillyAndTheSillies · 27/06/2021 15:56

The only one I know is french and pronounces it eenezz - beautiful name.

RoseAndRose · 27/06/2021 15:55

If French, it's an-ez, with a nasal sound in the first syllable (think his the French pronounce other words starting 'in' like 'interesant' and you'll get the idea)

BrownEyedSquirrel · 27/06/2021 15:52

To me it is a Portuguese name and pronounced Eee-nesh

BalloonSlayer · 27/06/2021 15:50

I thought it had a "th" sound or a silent z.

So either Ineth or Iney

Damia · 27/06/2021 15:49

I'm from south Wales too and would pronounce Eira as eye-rah, but I would say Ines as Inn-ez.
