It was the joke name in one of Adrian Mole's writing forays, wasn't it?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/06/2021 16:51

I had a school friend who was called Jonquil and she was lovely so it's a yes from me.

DPotter · 29/06/2021 16:46

Sorry OP but it reminds me of a paint colour I used to have - a lovely light yellow. It's not a name I could stomach

Summerdayshaze · 29/06/2021 16:40

One of the my English professors was called this. I think it’s cool.

RickOShay · 28/06/2021 09:34

@saraclara I thought that too Smile
It is an unusual name!

pucelleauxblanchesmains · 28/06/2021 01:09

It sounds like a brand of sleeping pills to me

saraclara · 27/06/2021 23:14

I wonder of you posters who knew a Jonquil at school, all knew the same one?

You could have a class reunion on MN!

LittleDidSheKnow · 27/06/2021 21:47

Nice flower, clunky word, AWFUL name.

LadyCatStark · 27/06/2021 21:28

It’s a Game of Thrones name in my mind but it’s not a very pretty name for a flower name imho.

Lalliella · 27/06/2021 21:18

It sounds like something Jacob Rees-Mogg would name his poodle.

VenusClapTrap · 27/06/2021 21:05

I love it. Botanical and classy. I would worry a bit about it being shortened to Jon or Jonny though.

RickOShay · 27/06/2021 20:12

Like other posters I knew one at school. She was older than me and very very cool.
I like it Smile

Holly60 · 27/06/2021 20:09

I really dislike it

Snoopsnoggysnog · 27/06/2021 20:07

God - these replies 🤦🏻‍♀️
I don’t mind it but I knew one at school and I think her mother was French. It sounds much nicer the French way but unfortunately she was just called Jonkwil, in the English pronunciation, which I agree sounds awful and like a medicine.

TatianaBis · 27/06/2021 19:55

In French it’s lovely - zzjonkee (ye)

HelebethH · 27/06/2021 19:48

I once knew a little girl called Jonquill. Her mother was French and and when pronounced in the French accent sounded lovely. Think Jean pronouned the french way zhon and quielle .

Yutes · 27/06/2021 19:36

Sorry. Didn’t RTFT. Presumed it was for a boy.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 27/06/2021 19:34

@Yutes

What about Torquil?
Very much a boys’ name.
saraclara · 27/06/2021 19:29

One of those names that looks pretty and comes from a pretty thing, but sounds awful, and will end up with a girl called Jon.

Umberellatheweatha · 27/06/2021 19:29

Theres an Australian series about a ghost rockstar who comes back to haunt the apartment he died in and one of the main actresses us called jonquill.

Have to say it didn't sound right to the ears ti me. It's a terribly fussy name. And sounds masculine. I'd skip it.

The series was fun though xD

Yutes · 27/06/2021 19:28

What about Torquil?

Helenluvsrob · 27/06/2021 19:27

Love it. Had a friend with that name as a kid. Seemed very exotic at the time. Such a unique name I now know what she does for a living too 😂

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 27/06/2021 19:26

@romdowa

It sounds made up 🙈🙈 sorry
again, all names are made up

your name was made up at some point

romdowa · 27/06/2021 19:25

It sounds made up 🙈🙈 sorry

NotTheCatsWhiskers · 27/06/2021 19:24

It’s awful. I assumed it was a boys name. It’s just so ugly and clunky sounding.
