Hi,
We aren’t sure if we are having a boy or girl yet, we have a boys name but really struggling with a girls name.
I want baby girls middle name to be Mary after my nan, what do we think of Sylvie as a first name?
It’s my fiancé’s Nan’s name and I know it would mean a lot to him but is it a bit too old fashioned? My younger sister has a very old fashioned name as she was born just as my grandad died and it was after him and I know she’s hated it her whole life and I don’t want to do that to a baby haha.

So what do we reckon to Sylvie?

I love Sylvie but I don't think it goes with Mary. If you had Sylvie Maria or Silvia Mary, I think it would flow better.

WeasilyPleased · 23/03/2022 22:29

I prefer Sylvia. It's more rounded and grown up. Sylvia Mary sounds better than Sylvie Mary which is a bit sing-song.

RoostasTowel · 23/03/2022 18:25

I like it. Go for it.

Lots of children born right now have old-fashioned names. Sylvie won't stick out in a bad way.

SallyWD · 22/03/2022 19:04

I've always loved it.

melissasummerfield · 22/03/2022 19:04

I know 20 pp have already said it but i love Sylvie too!

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 22/03/2022 19:01

Ahhh now I've thought about it more I'm swinging round to Sylvie as the full first name. It's really very lovely.

moofolk · 22/03/2022 17:17

Love it

urbanbuddha · 22/03/2022 17:15

Sylvie is lovely. I like it much better than Sylvia.
I don't think it really matters if the names go together if you're choosing them to honour relatives. We so rarely say our fuĺl names out loud. If it really bothers you how about Marie ("Mar-ee") or Maria?

Purpleavocado · 22/03/2022 17:10

It's a lovely name!

schnubbins · 22/03/2022 17:08

Absolutely love it !

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 22/03/2022 17:06

I like Sylvie but think Sylvia is a better first name - more grown up - but you could have Sylvia on her birth certificate and use Sylvie as a diminutive.

I do agree with other posters that the two names don't sound well together, if you wanted to have Sylvie as the proper name. Either put another middle name in between to break them up or change one of the ending sounds - Sylvia Mary, Sylvie Maria, or Sylvia Marie are all lovely.

Sylvia Marie would be my favourite, actually, having just written it down!

duvetdayforeveryone · 22/03/2022 17:00

@UrgentExit

Absolutely love it, but would choose Marie as the middle name.
This.
PukkaP · 22/03/2022 16:59

Love it

ParanoidGynodroid · 22/03/2022 16:57

Beautiful. Spirit of the woods!

KirstenBlest · 22/03/2022 16:22

Sylvie is ok but Sylvia is awful

Lolamoon123 · 22/03/2022 14:50

Don’t go with Sylvia! Sylvie is much better. She doesn’t need a ‘full’ name on her birth certificate. It’s 2022. I know a Sylvie and she has two sisters, Gracie Florence and Nancy Evelyn - all really cute old fashioned / old lady names if you ask me
Ps that’s a good thing!! That’s the kind of name I go for.

cheeseisnice · 27/06/2021 17:55

I have a five year old Sylvie. Get lots of compliments, it's gorgeous IMO. Grin

ScribblyBaller · 25/06/2021 13:16

I think it's gorgeous. And it goes fine with Mary. Nice to give both the grandmothers a nod. Smile

Synchrony · 25/06/2021 12:49

I prefer Sylvia but like both and don't find them dated. It makes me think of forest nymphs!

JanFebAnyMonth · 24/06/2021 22:17

Lovely but NOT followed by Mary.

LaLaLouella · 24/06/2021 22:17

Sylvie is lovely - I'm not sure it goes with Mary though... too many 'eee' sounds.

Sylvie Maria works better to my ears!

JamieLeeBee · 24/06/2021 22:13

My ex had a cousin who named her daughter Sylvie. I genuinely love it, timeless. Obviously I couldn't use it for my daughter as it would have been weird as she was born to a useless dad after him, but i say go for it!

FoolsAssassin · 24/06/2021 22:10

There was a character on something I watched yesterday with that name and I thought it was nice and will due a come back at some point.

Smoores · 24/06/2021 21:59

Thanks all, seems like a lot of positive comments. His Nan’s name is Sylvia although I prefer Sylvie and think Sylvia seems a lot more dated than Sylvie. I think I need to have a think about the 2 names together, thanks all ♥️

Fine - if you're giving birth to a 60 year old French woman
