A nickname for James

I absolutely love the name James.
DH has a young and pretty distant cousin with the same name, (we don't see them often, so not too fussed about trouble with "stealing" the name), and the whole family uses the nickname Jimmy.
I don't know anyone called James, so Jimmy as a nickname threw me a bit. It turns out I can't get on with it as a nickname at all, to the point I'd avoid using the name.
I'm not against nicknames, I actually love Jamie as a casual version of James.
Anyone who knows a James, is that a common nickname? And if we used Jamie as an alternative to Jimmy, would that catch on?

Every James around my age (late twenties) is either James or Jamie. I don't know any Jim/Jimmys my age, but I know several adult Jamies.

I stand corrected about the Jamie connection. I've just never heard it as that and always considered as a name in its own right as opposed to the likes of Jim/Jimmy which I'd usually presume they were named James originally.

We used to go as far as Jamesie Jim-Bob when DS2 was very little and cute.

James, Jamie, Jim, Jimmy, Jamesie, Jimbo 🤣
Obviously Jamie has become a name on its own but. it to not realise it comes from James 🤷🏼‍♀️

It's a brilliant name and a totally legit nickname. We have so far dodged 'Tommy' as a nickname for Thomas (really don't like it at all) and everyone calls him Tom, so go for it!

Jas pronounced jazz is a common one round here, as is Jamie.

Jimmy is very dated to me, I do t know any young jimmies or Jims.

We have and have had a lot of James in our family, so it was an obvious name for DC
Jim
Jimmy
Jamie
Jim again.

Mine is a James. Apart from when he’s Jamesy to me, or Jam Donut to his friends.

Just call him James and the names will flow..

(And of course Jamie is a nick name for James!)

The Jameses I know (aged 2-98) are: James, Jim, Jimmy, Jamie (most of the young ones), Hamish (from Seumas, Gaelic for James).

DH’s cousin is a James and is known to the entire family as Jim-Jam Paddiwack despite being a 6 foot four army sergeant.

Nicknames stick you may intend Jamie but something entirely different sticks.

Either way it’s a lovely name that is quite underused at the moment!

Jamie is definitely a possible nickname for James.
It's like saying Bobbie isn't a nickname for Robert. 🤷

My brother is James. We called him Jamesy when he was little but he's mostly just James.

2 are James and one is Jam or Jammy. Don’t know why, I met him as an adult, but James doesn’t suit him. He’s a bit of a Jack the lad.

Most Jameses I know are just James. Although I’m not sure why people seem surprised that Jamie is a nickname for James? I think Jimmy is only really used of the parents or child specifically want it to be and start it off.

Jamie is of course a form of James (as is Jimmy). I much prefer the latter, but both are very commonly used.

Or you could go for Jimbo

Most nicknames that stick are given by family so if you don't like Jimmy then stamp that out early on, or given by friends at school, I don't think many kids would know Jimmy as a nickname for James these days so you should be ok.

I know a James who was a Jamie, became "Jamie James" at school and is now James or.... Jamesie.

It's a lovely name. Think I would go with the classic James.

I have a James, he's just James tbh, don't like any nn for it.
Someone tried Jimmy once and I think my face said it all so he's never been called that again

The 3 older men I know who are called James are known as Jimmy.

I know one 11 year old James, who is always just James.

I know 2 Jamie’s, both are standalone Jamie’s.

Thank you all, I think hormones might be making me think a bit too deeply into this than needed, ha!
Our DS1 has a commonly used royal name, so calling DS2 Jamie wouldn't really fit - James would work well though.

@YellowColour middle name would be Edward
