What are your thoughts on Oran for a boy?

Oren is fine in Wales

Oren means orange in Welsh.

Oren means orange in Welsh.

Yes. It's a colour, as are Llwyd and Gwyn. Hence my post.

Oran... g utan

PattyPan · 23/06/2021 15:58

It just sounds like it’s missing something to me. Probably my brain is trying to auto-fill orange. I say this despite knowing an Oren.

Oran “juice” Jones. Algerian city where Camus set his book The Plague.

Bobojangles · 24/06/2021 18:45

Lovely name but spell it the proper Irish way

midsomermurderess · 25/06/2021 22:29

I think of the Algerian city, in which Camus, apparently set his novel The Plague.

I had Oren on my list but DH didn't like it.

I would be unsure how to pronounce Oran if I came across it. I'd probably pronounce it or-an (rhymes with for-an) as a first guess but I wouldn't be sure whether it was supposed to be more like o (like in hot) - ran or even oh-ran.

I had Oren (Hebrew for pine tree) on my list. Had no idea is meant orange in Welsh

HarrietM87 · 01/07/2021 19:39

How are you pronouncing it? I’m Irish and I’d say it (and Odhran) Orrrran with the “or” to rhyme with bore. I have a Scottish friend called Oran where it sounds like the start of orange. I much prefer the Irish pronunciation.

It's a very famously beautiful Algerian city! I like it (as pp mentioned Camus also set The Plague there but don't let that put you off).
