What are your thoughts on Oran for a boy?

It's a very famously beautiful Algerian city! I like it (as pp mentioned Camus also set The Plague there but don't let that put you off).

HarrietM87 · 01/07/2021 19:39

How are you pronouncing it? I’m Irish and I’d say it (and Odhran) Orrrran with the “or” to rhyme with bore. I have a Scottish friend called Oran where it sounds like the start of orange. I much prefer the Irish pronunciation.

Lenny86 · 01/07/2021 09:54

I had Oren (Hebrew for pine tree) on my list. Had no idea is meant orange in Welsh

BertieBotts · 25/06/2021 22:34

I had Oren on my list but DH didn't like it.

I would be unsure how to pronounce Oran if I came across it. I'd probably pronounce it or-an (rhymes with for-an) as a first guess but I wouldn't be sure whether it was supposed to be more like o (like in hot) - ran or even oh-ran.

midsomermurderess · 25/06/2021 22:29

I think of the Algerian city, in which Camus, apparently set his novel The Plague.

Bobojangles · 24/06/2021 18:45

Lovely name but spell it the proper Irish way

KeflavikAirport · 24/06/2021 18:43

Oran “juice” Jones. Algerian city where Camus set his book The Plague.

PattyPan · 23/06/2021 15:58

It just sounds like it’s missing something to me. Probably my brain is trying to auto-fill orange. I say this despite knowing an Oren.

tartantroosers · 23/06/2021 15:38

Oran... g utan

KirstenBlest · 23/06/2021 15:31

Oren means orange in Welsh.

Yes. It's a colour, as are Llwyd and Gwyn. Hence my post.

Merchymor · 23/06/2021 15:19

Oren is fine in Wales

Oren means orange in Welsh.

miltonj · 23/06/2021 12:46

Really nice and strong. Doesn't sound anything like oral and even if it does...... so what?

KirstenBlest · 23/06/2021 12:02

@IamnotwhouthinkIam

Love it, seems familiar yet not too popular. But I too prefer the Orin/Orrin spelling - however if you are Irish, I can see that Oran/Odhran makes more sense (I love Hebrew Oren too, but that's not usable in Wales!)
Oren is fine in Wales, Llwyd and Gwyn are ok. Clementine is popular on MN.

Not keen on Oran. Orangutans are nice though.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/06/2021 08:42

I think you'll have to use the Irish spelling because Oran sounds like a medicine or something. Later on, cruel kids may add -ge or, even worse, -gutan to the name for a laugh.

PinkCast · 23/06/2021 08:40

I like it, was on our list - but would spell it Odhrán too.

thyroidhelp · 23/06/2021 08:33

Not keen personally

iduno · 22/06/2021 22:44

Sorry I think it's awful.

DipperandMabel · 22/06/2021 22:30

I like it apart from it (used to be?) a waste management company and I remember seeing the waste lorries driving about and I think of that….

Sorry but that’s the association in my mind which clearly no one else has!

But then the never ending story isnt that the Oran?

accentdusoleil · 22/06/2021 22:23

Algerian city ?

yellowthursday · 22/06/2021 22:22

I like it.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 22/06/2021 22:17

Too close to Onan for me.

VenusClapTrap · 22/06/2021 22:09

You could be right! Grin

DramaAlpaca · 22/06/2021 22:04

@VenusClapTrap I'm sure the character's name was Orin Grin

purplecorkheart · 22/06/2021 21:19

I like it. Ireland based. Oran would be a fairly common name for teens between 12 -18 where I live. It is more uncommon in younger age groups.

VenusClapTrap · 22/06/2021 21:16

Wasn’t there a character in Howard’s Way called Oran? God I’m old.
