Kit, short for Christopher

Thoughts on Kit, short for Christopher? Christopher would only be on the BC. Is it a bit of an eyebrow raiser, how different the names are? An thoughts appreciated!

I love it!

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 27/06/2021 18:19

Also it makes me think of the car in Knight Rider which is pretty cool. 😁

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 27/06/2021 18:18

I haven't met one but it seems to be quite a Mumsnetty name and often comes up on here.

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/06/2021 17:59

I love this name. It would have been my youngest's name if it went with our surname.

nodtik · 27/06/2021 17:58

I'm married to a 50 year old Kit, full name Christopher!!

I really like it xx

VanillaAndOrange · 27/06/2021 17:54

I knew a Christopher at university whose dad called him Kit, so since I first met him with his dad I assumed he went by Kit for a while, but then found out he was introducing himself to people as Chris. I guess the moral is you can call him Kit but you can't guarantee he won't want his friends to call him Chris or Christopher when he's older - maybe choose a different name, or make Kit the official name on the BC, if that would be a deal breaker for you. Personally I rather like Kit, and Kester too.

Lellochip · 25/06/2021 22:54

Apparently the actor Kit Harington didn't realise his own name was Christopher till he was 11 😄

Breadandbutterpudding85 · 25/06/2021 22:43

I don't know any Kits but it's a normal nn for Christopher and I wouldn't bat an eyelid

Great choice

Literaryseed · 24/06/2021 15:31

I love it. Met one for the first time about 5 years ago and he was a lovely man with a lovely family.

transformandriseup · 24/06/2021 15:23

Kittow/Kit is the Cornish for Christopher and I've heard it a small handful of times here.

LizJamIsFab · 24/06/2021 15:21

I think it’s great (and a bit posh)

NeedNewKnees · 24/06/2021 15:18

@MysteriousMonkey

Yet. Love Kit. Always makes me think of The Boy Next Door by Enid Blyton (I think that's the right book)
Me too! Loved that book. And Kit Marlow, of course.
NigellaSeed · 24/06/2021 15:17

Like it. A bit different but not OTT

cindarellasbelly · 24/06/2021 15:15

The only Kit I know is female, 20-something (and has problems with people mis-hearing it as Kate!) and of course the car from knight rider! But I would have known it as a nickname for Christopher.

Cbeebiesrehab · 24/06/2021 15:13

I like Kit, ambivalent about Christopher. I do think it is a pain to have a diminutive that starts with a different letter to your BC name though-so I would probably avoid it.

Lindy2 · 24/06/2021 12:29

I really like it. I'd do exactly as you plan Christopher on bc. Kit as the used name.

To me it's a pretty cool name without being too try hard. William/Will is also another formal name/nick name combination I like.

Marcipex · 24/06/2021 12:24

It’s okay, but I think I’d use Kristopher as the registered name.

RuthW · 24/06/2021 12:20

Kit is a standardised shortening of Christopher. Lovely name

DinosaurDiana · 24/06/2021 09:02

I’d put Kit on his birth certificate if he’s never going to be called Christopher.
It’s a nice name on its own.

I love the name Christopher,I have known quite a few over the years, they have always used nn Chris though. Not known a Kit, if you intend to call your DS Kit, then I would just call him Kit. I don’t know, any Kit’s. I quite like it, but wasn’t the car in Knight Rider call KITT, giving my age away there!

FelicityPike · 24/06/2021 07:12

I personally know 3. 1 a 50 odd year old and 2 under 5’s.
Then I know OF (never met them) another 4 under 2’s.

kmini · 23/06/2021 22:38

Thank you for all your replies. For those that know Kits, do you know more than one?

I feel like there are lots of little Kits around at the moment. I doubt an eyebrow will so much as twitch.
