Hello,

I'm a believer in nicknames coming quite organically but I'd love to hear from anyone with a Lyra or who knows a Lyra what nicknames they use? Nothing is springing to mind.

Disclaimer- I'm not actually pregnant. I'm 2.5 years in to secondary infertility and recurrant miscarriage but a girl can dream.

Nicknames aren’t compulsory. Why give a child a name and then call her something else?
Besides the child will provide her own nickname, our youngest was Smidge, short for Stinky Midget.. and Spider Monkey and Elbow.
All spontaneous!

Goggleb0x · 25/09/2021 08:29

I know this is an old thread but just wanted to add that I have an 12 year old Lyra who is called Lyra by all her friends at school but at home she is LyLy, Lyzzie and Lys.

midsomermurderess · 26/07/2021 14:47

It's so short, does it even warrant one? One might naturally evolve in any event.

LittleGwyneth · 26/07/2021 13:12

I know someone with a very similar name who gets called Lala, but she is six so that might change when she's older.

Madcats · 25/07/2021 14:29

Sorry if this is a bit insensitive, but our cats are Lyra and Pan.

I lengthen both!

Lyra = Lyra Byra
Pan = Pan Pan

PumpkinKlNG · 24/07/2021 21:43

Lie

Classica · 24/07/2021 21:40

It's one of those names I'd elongate into something ridiculous like lyra-spira-lou-lou.

I hope you get to name another baby, OP Flowers

Createdjustforthis · 24/07/2021 21:02

My Lyra is called Ly-ly, Ly-loo, Lyra-loo and snot bag.

Ifixfastjets · 24/07/2021 20:48

The lyra I know gets called star.
From the constellation lyra

Hi I’m 16 so am no where near ready for children and won’t be for at least 10 years but as most girls, I’ve got a list of baby names and one of the girl names that I’ve wanted to use for years now is Lyra. I first heard of it from the golden compass and I loved how unique it was. But since his dark materials came out and Ed sheeran called his daughter Lyra, the name has become a lot more popular and by the time I have a child, it will most likely be heard everywhere. I don’t really want to be naming a daughter a name that 4 other children in her class will have.

To get to the point, I would like a name that I could shorten to Lyra. That way, it’s more unique and I can still have my name. It would hopefully also stop people thinking her mum was a crazy Ed sheeran fan 😂

Thanks x

AnotherSunrise · 25/06/2021 01:07

Why would you want a nickname?

Lalliella · 25/06/2021 01:04

Sorry to hear of your struggles OP. I hope that baby girl Lyra will be in your arms very soon. Or baby boy Lionel! It’s a really pretty name, I don’t think it needs a nickname.

Kanaloa · 25/06/2021 00:42

I wouldn’t think Lyra has a natural nickname. Short names are lovely in that they’re predictable, I wouldn’t spoil a lovely name like Lyra with a nickname.

azimuth299 · 25/06/2021 00:38

My Lyra is called Looby Loo, Dizzy and Scribble! I'm interested to see that there are a few Lyra-Lous in this thread, I wouldn't have expected it to be a common nickname!

FayCarew · 23/06/2021 18:11

Good idea to check for nn. My uncle is a Neil but all his mates call him Nelly.

ScrollingLeaves · 23/06/2021 18:09

Pan short for Pantelaimon, Lyra’s daemon in Northern Lights by Phillip Pullman

Literaryseed · 23/06/2021 18:06

Thank you to those who suggested ideas and were sympathetic.

I know it doesn't need a nickname or that nicknames can be prescribed (you'll see thats the first thing I said in my OP) I was asking out of curiosity. If you read why I'm asking and what we've been through I really can't understand the snarky responses.

I know a Lyra who gets called “Dobbo” by her friends Grin Hmm

Nicknames can’t really be prescribed…

Violetlavenders · 22/06/2021 14:08

Why does a 4 letter name need a nickname HmmConfused?

Maybe name her Lyralina and then shorten to Lyra?

SapphosRock · 22/06/2021 13:06

A Lyra I know is called Lyra-Lou by close family

ILoveShula · 22/06/2021 12:52

@Mamamamasaurus

Why would an already short name need a nickname? Surely the point of a nickname is a shortened version of their actual name?
Not at all, @Mamamamasaurus.

'Nickname' is what MN call pet forms of a name (e.g.Liz/Beth/Betty for Elizabeth etc).

A nickname IRL is a familiar or humorous name given to a person or thing instead of or as well as the real name (e.g. Curly nn for Norman Watts, Tiger nn for Eldrick Woods, Buzz nn of Edwin Aldrin)

Pinkywoo · 22/06/2021 12:40

Stretch!

Twinmammaplusone · 22/06/2021 10:12

Ly ly? As @HumpHumpWhale said, often nicknames are not even related. It made me smile that your Anna is piggy, my Annie is often called birdy!

SpaceRaiders · 22/06/2021 10:10

I love the name Lyra it was my first choice but was vetoed. We went with Lara instead, no nicknames us such here unless you count Lara Lou, squiggles and squirrel!
