If you had to change your name (not to anything silly like Profiterolina) what first name would you go for?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
generalkenobi · 21/06/2021 19:31

So I'm trans so actually did choose Tristan for myself but... if I had to choose another name I think I'd like to be Jasper (close first to Will or Phineas)

Huginamugg · 21/06/2021 18:46

Anna or Cara.

Frankiefarr · 21/06/2021 18:19

I was born Susan with a really horrible middle name that to my horror is now fashionable but was the source of much bullying as it was the name of our prime minister. My parents always called me Sue and still do. I cannot remember a time when I didn’t hate it and I never, ever referred to myself as Sue. I changed my first and middle names completely by deed poll when I was 18 and now I’ve been my new name for longer than I was ever my old name. It is still a source of some contention in so much as I still ask my mum why on earth did she give me such a boring, common name then compound it by shortening it to Sue and insisting on using it when I hated it and never used that shortening. She admitted recently she didn’t like it either much and had actually wanted to call me Helena!!

35andThriving · 20/06/2021 19:03

These days Dorothy. When I was younger Leah or Amber

hennybeans · 18/06/2021 19:12

I'd like to be Nina or maybe Violet.

I like my real name though, as it's fairly unusual. One person above has mentioned it would be their choice.

goneroguetoday · 18/06/2021 19:03

In fact, Saskia Sylvester-Jones
And I'd have a gorgeous glossy straight chestnut lob, blue eyes and white teeth.

goneroguetoday · 18/06/2021 19:02

Saskia

mogtheexcellent · 18/06/2021 18:55

I love Sophie. But can't pronounce 'ph' correctly so it was a no for the name change when I seriously considered it at 18 and also as a name for my daughter.

@TooTiredForToday

My married name is similar to da silva but much longer. Its a right pain in the arse, especially with a 4 syllable first name. Even my husband uses my maiden name in restaurants etc as he can't be bothered to spell it out yet again.

VanillaAndOrange · 18/06/2021 18:41

Charlotte or Sasha.

LadyWithLapdog · 18/06/2021 06:49

@azimuth299 Wow, small world! I can’t remember where it was, or what country, or whether an airport or a restaurant or even a wedding.

FlowerPower3110 · 17/06/2021 22:38

Juliet
Lydia
Beatrice

FuglyBitch · 17/06/2021 22:38

Mine is a foreign name, I’d love to be a Sofia, not traditional English but slightly foreign and easy to pronounce

azimuth299 · 17/06/2021 22:24

@LadyWithLapdog

Olympia

I saw two little girls on holiday years ago, Olympia and maybe Calypso or something like that. They were such cuties. I think Olympia would suit any age and I’ve liked it since.

I think we know the same girls, I doubt that two families chose that combination! Gorgeous names.
Appletreehat · 17/06/2021 14:38

Growing up, I went through stages of wanting to be called Wendy, Chloe and Nicole. You can probably tell I was born in the late 80's!

newtb · 17/06/2021 14:16

inmyslippers

I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill youGrinGrin

inmyslippers · 17/06/2021 14:11

I really want to know what your name is newt

MonaChopsis · 17/06/2021 14:03

Merryn. I'd love to be a Merryn.

EssentialHummus · 17/06/2021 13:52

I have a horrendous (in the UK) 70s name - I come from abroad and it just doesn’t have the same connotations there, plus it puts me out of kilter with my age/demographic. And to make matters worse when I was still working in the City people would regularly mistake my surname for a first name and assume I was a Muslim bloke.

I dunno… I’ve sort of made peace with it now. If it’s held me back professionally I wouldn’t know about it.

Dollygirl2008 · 17/06/2021 13:48

Another vote for Claudia. Just think it sounds so classy!

Crunchymum · 17/06/2021 13:43

When I was little I always wanted to be "Cassie"

My name is 'of its era' but its my name and its part of who I am.

I did used to give myself two extra middle names when I was a teenager - think Nicola June Felicity Alexandra (the latter two being made up)

BestIsWest · 17/06/2021 13:12

I like my name, it is mentioned up thread but I would have loved a Welsh name. My absolute favourite is Esyllt so I’ll go with that.

Don’t know why I didn’t get one, my brother did.

MsFogi · 17/06/2021 13:02

Claude
Coolest woman I ever met (Parisian of course) was called Claude. I would be totally kick-ass if I was called Claude.

campion · 17/06/2021 12:59

@LewishamMum
I was very surprised when a good friend of mine showed me her travel pass with a completely different name! She never bothered with the deed poll bit but when she left school just told everyone she was now Esmeralda (obv not that) and was known as that from then on.

It's never been a problem but obviously official documents have her birth name.

If you don't like your name I think it's a good idea to change it.

LewishamMum · 17/06/2021 11:32

Well I'd keep my name, but only because I changed it aged 12 :)
When I was 12 decided I did like my name and refused to speak to anyone unless they called me by my new name. It carried on a bit in school, as I couldn't completely refuse to talk to teachers. Changed it by deed poll when I was 18, and no one I met at uni or after knows what the old one even is.
Although I think it's a bit 80s, and now a bit middle aged and middle class, I like the fact it's international and more than one syllable (which I always think is boring), but short enough to never get abbreviated. Plus it really suits me. It just me. And I don't think my family would let me sulk like a 12 year old if I wanted to change it again.

So, to all those aspring Profiterolina's out there.....just change it by deed poll. It's actually pretty simple!
