Girl name Roxanne?! Personality type...

Ok call me crazy but I'm a big believer that names and personality traits go hand in hand, for example, I have never got on with anyone with the name Natalie for some reason, and everyone I have ever known called Jade is quite headstrong and stubborn (no offence to anyone named Jade). I also feel that everyone I have ever met with my name (Kelly) has a quite similar personality to me too... Does anyone else agree?
Anyway, I really like the girls name Roxanne, most likely shortened to Roxie. I like it mostly because of the Police song, my first daughter is named after a song too which I love as a little theme for my children's names.
The only Roxanne I know of though is that bloody Roxanne Pallett who was on Big Brother, who came across very badly on the show indeed...
I'm just wondering if anyone knows any Roxanne's and what kind of personality they have?!😊
Thanks in advance!

I know two. One is a teacher. She is kind, outgoing and friendly. The other has had a v hard life and is currently in rehab.

I really don't think you can lump people together this way. It's as useful as astrology tbh.

I know a few people who have used the names from songs theme though, including Delilah, Lola, Ruby, Jude.

I'm named after a Beach Boys song but my name is not popular at all.

realroxanne · 18/06/2021 09:41

Interesting post , I'm a Roxanne and have known others

I'm a 39yr old married senior manager in the city

Ny best friend is also Roxanne and is a Nhs consultant

I'd say both of us are funny, confident, not brash, fashionable, clever

At uni people sang Roxanne to us and did the drinking fame. At the time Roxy by surf brand was everywhere too.

It's always been seen as a cool girl type name. The name means sunrise and is nothing to do with sex / strippers.

I often get comments and how cool my name and is and how I suit the name. I'm smily and fun and when I was younger was foxy Roxy.

Babydust13 · 18/06/2021 01:20

My dog is a Roxanne/Roxy and we sing the song to her. 😂😂

The only actual person Roxanne I have known was a stripper but each to their own

BanditoShipman · 18/06/2021 00:27

You want your dd to be a prostitute?

Fair enough if you just liked the name but didn’t know the song, but you say you like it because of the song…. The song where she’s a prostitute Hmm

Kokeshi123 · 18/06/2021 00:14

I mean the song is a classic, not the name Roxanne.

I think Roxan(n)a feels quite different.

Kokeshi123 · 18/06/2021 00:13

I like Roxana/Roxanna--it's a wonderful and ancient name.

Roxanne is a bit too reminiscent of the "Leanne" "Suzanne" "Joanne" type names that were given a lot in the 70s (also, "Anne" as every girl's middle name). Also, the Police song. It's a bit of a classic so I think it will continue to be "known."

krj2688 · 17/06/2021 13:14

My 4 year old daughter is Roxanna. She is very head strong but very sweet and kind

drpet49 · 17/06/2021 11:48

Sorry but when I hear Roxanne I just think sex worker/ stripper

woodfort · 17/06/2021 11:43

I think it's quite a "tough girl" name and if I was writing a book about a playground bully or a woman that was a bit unhinged, created drama wherever she went and liked sleeping with other women's husbands then Roxanne would be up there in the top name choices.

YES. Not sure about the sleeping with other women’s husbands bit but if I’m honest I see Roxanne as a bit of a “touch girl” name.
I also think it’s quite dated, so I see a Roxanne being tough in the playground in the 80s/90s alongside her friends Donna and Gemma.

I get what you mean about names because I think names and how we look as well as things like our family shape who we become.

TatianaBis · 17/06/2021 11:40

I prefer Roxanna and Rosanna personally.

Roxie is 100% stripper name.

TheSockMonster · 17/06/2021 11:21

One of my friends from primary school is called Roxanne. She’s funny, extroverted, loud, works as a hairdresser, ‘downs pints with the lads’ kind of persona, can be a little crass (sorry Roxanne!) but is exceptionally kind and genuine.

1940s · 17/06/2021 10:56

I can't ever imagine a song about a prostitute inspiring me to name my daughter.

It's also a pretty infamous drinking game song for uni students.

I don't particularly dislike the name but can't get over the inspiration directly from a song about prostitutes.

1940s · 17/06/2021 10:54

You like it because of the police song. Are you being serious?

MissSmiley · 17/06/2021 10:53

One of my best friends is called Roxanne, it really doesn't suit her, she's much more of a charlotte or something more traditional, she's quite quiet and sporty. She's always been called Rocky too

roobicoobi · 17/06/2021 10:32

Names don't dictate anyone's personality. It's quite bizarre to think people with the same name are all of similar 'type' - the only thing happening is people like you making judgement of someone based on a name. It's quite a low and unintelligent thing to do, basic human nature has shown many differences in people, and we all know a name is simply something our parents give us, usually at birth, before any personality is evident.

Standrewsschool · 17/06/2021 10:28

If you love it, go for it!

Standrewsschool · 17/06/2021 10:28

The Roxanne song was released in 1978 so will be music her grandparents (or great gp) listened to. Consequently, I think you can eliminate any concerns about the link to the song.

LoopTheLoops · 17/06/2021 10:22

I know a Roxanne and she’s not very nice at all! But then I think names are just names and I don’t really agree with your op.

SW100 · 16/06/2021 22:40

My sister is called Roxanne. She has often had the police song sung to her which has never bothered her. She generally gets a lot of comments on how cool her name is. She’s laid back, creative and musical.

highlighteryellow · 16/06/2021 14:21

I knew one about 20 years ago and she was really lovely, clever and quite shy. A bit of a tortured soul maybe.

I wouldn't use it personally because of the sting song but I guess our children's generation probably won't know that song.

PurpleyBlue · 16/06/2021 11:49

Does anyone else agree?

No, I don't feel anyone's personality comes from their name. Maybe if people treat them differently because of their name it has some impact.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 16/06/2021 11:35

I really like it as a name, strong, unusual.

But the song? . she's a prostitute. Why do you want to knowingly do that?

Blueballinthegarden · 16/06/2021 11:29

My DD3 has decided that her future maybe sister is going to be called Roxie after one of her childminders guinea pigs, which is my current association with the name. I do like it though, see it as a strong name too.

Gullible2021 · 16/06/2021 11:15

I don't agree with your post at all...it's quite strange to think that you feel all people with the same name end up with the same personality. I know lots of Natalies, Kellys and Jades who are nothing alike. For example one Kelly is the best friend I ever had and the other turned out to be a genuine psychopath and backstabbed who really hurt my family members at a vulnerable time in their lives without a hint of remorse. There were two Natalies in my class at school who couldn't have been more different.

Anyway, Roxanne conjures up prostitute (song), murderer (Roxie Hart) or Roxanne Pallet to me. I think it's quite a "tough girl" name and if I was writing a book about a playground bully or a woman that was a bit unhinged, created drama wherever she went and liked sleeping with other women's husbands then Roxanne would be up there in the top name choices.

But that doesn't mean your daughter would be anything like that. When you give a name, it's just a name you are giving, not a prescriptive personality along with it.

There are nicer song related names. I do wonder if your daughter would turn round and ask why you named her after a song about a prostitute. Jolene is best avoided for similar reasons (man stealing wh*re).

CaffiSaliMali · 16/06/2021 11:02

I've never met a Roxanne. The name reminds me of Simon Webbe's wonderful Argentine tango to the song Roxanne on Strictly about 9 years ago. Then it reminds me of Barry from Big Bang Theory telling Penny that Penny wasn't a sexy enough name so he was going to call her Roxanne instead.

If I had to imagine a Roxanne I imagine someone who is quite feisty and outgoing.

I've only met one other person with my name and we were nothing alike! When I think of names which are common in people my age - Sarah, Laura, Emma - the people I know with those names are all quite different personality wise. I know some truly wonderful Emmas and some horrible Emmas as well.
