Is Leonie too weird?

I don't know the sex, but have loved this name since read it in a novel aged about 12. Never met anyone who has it though.
I always assumed it was pronounced Lee-OH-nee. I know it's different in France/Germany (where it originates), but that doesn't bother me.
I don't want my DD (if it is a D!) to go through life spelling and pronouncing her name for people.
How would you say it? I like unusual names, just not names where you have to spell it out all your life.

My teenage neice has this name. Her mother is French. Bil calls her Lee-oni not Lay-oni. Can't remember how she says it. In my head I can imagine her saying both ways.

I know 2 Leonies in their 30s/40s and a Leona in her 50s.

I think it's nice and not at all weird.

InnaBun · 14/06/2021 09:43

It's nice, I like Leona too

Heyha · 14/06/2021 09:43

Not at all, have taught a few but not loads. I've always said it Lay-oh-ni and never had a teenage girl strop in response so can't have been too far off.

Not weird at all. I've met a few through work. In the uk it's pronounced as you suggest.

I'd put it in the same sort of ilk as Naomi. Do you think that's too weird as well? There are children with far weirder names, trust me!

I know a Leonie, so it doesn’t seem weird to me. It’s a lovely name. The one I know stresses the first syllable - LAY-oh-nee.

GreyhoundG1rl · 14/06/2021 09:42

It's not weird at all?

Lemonlemon88 · 14/06/2021 09:42

I know two leonie's, pronounced how you say it. Both in their sixties though.

dementedpixie · 14/06/2021 09:42

I know a Leona. That's nice too

Cleverpolly3 · 14/06/2021 09:41

It’s lovely
