What do you think of Ellis, for a girl?

I’m still flummoxed that you are choosing names so incredibly similar to your husband’s ex’s name or maybe I’ve misread that.
I have an American relative called Ellis - male so I can’t see it another way easily.
Then I think Ellis Brigham - big ski/climbing shop.
Congrats op.

Synchrony · 12/06/2021 22:52

I don't think it sounds trashy, just very masculine (cf Eliot), and I also really dislike the way boy names get taken for girls, then become unusable for boys. I do like other non-traditional names.

But really, choose the name you like, not what Mumsnet likes!

Birchwoods · 12/06/2021 21:43

I prefer it as a girls name. I know a little Ellis, it suits her perfectly and is a lovely name. And nobody has ever called her Ellie, and why would they, it's not a shortened version of Ellis!

KisstheTeapot14 · 12/06/2021 13:11

Does tend to become 'El' as a short version, that's my only caveat.

LizzieMacQueen · 11/06/2021 21:50

We have this name repeated down the generations in our family though the spelling is Ellice. 3males 1female, so far.

@BabyAR22
Sure, but my sister who is a Danielle always asked not to be called Danny as my mom did not want that. Danielle didn't want that either. So my point is, you do have some degree of influence on what nicknames are acceptable and what are not, which will filter down to the child.

I think the most important part of that is that you sister also didn't want that. I knew a Becky at school whose mother didn't want her to be anything other than Rebecca. That didn't matter as she preferred Becky and became very frustrated at her mum constantly calling her a name she didn't like. There are also some children who will gravitate towards a nickname specifically because it annoys their parents!

diddlediddledump · 11/06/2021 21:42

From Greys Anatomy I love it too!!!

TatianaBis · 11/06/2021 21:39

You really don’t. Your sister may have been a particularly acquiescent personality, or your mother particularly dominant or both. Or perhaps they happened to feel the same.

If your DD doesn’t feel the same as you, you have a problem.

TatianaBis · 11/06/2021 21:36

Interesting as my sister is called Danielle and when people tried to call her Danny, she always corrected them, so she was always called what she wanted. I'd like to think my daughter would be the same

But that’s your sister’s preference. You’re talking about imposing your own preference on DD which won’t work as her friends will call her what they choose. DD won’t have negative associations with Ellie - it’s your issue not hers.

My name has several diminutives one of which my mum dislikes.That’s what my friends and nephews/nieces call me. I don’t have the problem with it she does.

CherryonBiscuit · 11/06/2021 21:12

It's my favourite name for a boy
I love it

TeenTraumaTrials · 11/06/2021 20:54

I went to school with a male Ellis. Have to say it's not a name I'd consider unisex but that is just me! I like Elise but given the ex's name I'd avoid any El name like pp's have suggested.

thebeach · 11/06/2021 20:53

Ellis is one of my favourite boys' names

BabyAR22 · 11/06/2021 20:51
@BabyAR22
That wouldn't happen only because we have to avoid Ellie since that's my husband's ex's name. My problem is that her name was Eleanor and I actually loooove that name so trying to find alternatives to that. I don't like Elena, or many other similar names, but do like Ellis. I could see us calling her El for short but not Ellie (only out of principle!!)

The problem with that is you can avoid calling her Ellie, but her friends at school won’t have any issue with your husband’s ex wife if they give her that nickname. Your daughter might prefer to go by Ellie. You can only avoid nicknames when they are very little. After that their name is theirs to do with what they want to. I don’t know how hard of a no Ellie is for you, but if it’s a firm boundary then discounting any El- names is probably sensible.
@Synchrony

Personally I loathe it, although I believe it's popular in America for girls so I wouldn't be surprised to find it's a girl.
Not really popular anywhere. I'm American so have been watching those charts too. Why do you loathe it? Just curious if it sounds trashy or you prefer more traditional names?

You cannot control what her friends call her. Her friends will most likely call her Ellie, so if that’s a problem find a different name.

I know an Ellis who is in her 20's and it suits her.

Rhi86 · 11/06/2021 20:01

One of our choices for a girl was Elys which is a Cornish pet form for Elizabeth. I think it looks more feminine with this spelling.

ginoclocksomewhere · 11/06/2021 19:49

I love it (another Grey's fan 😂). It's on my list 😊

DancingQueen85 · 11/06/2021 19:48

Great for a boy. Awful for a girl
