Curious to know how most folk would pronounce this name? Also any first impressions? Smile

You-luh ?

partyatthepalace · 12/06/2021 23:26

Ull-ah

German. Not v attractive - I mean the name not the person

ConstanceMarkievicz · 12/06/2021 13:10

it means apples in Irish.

I don't dislike it. Heard worse.

timoteigirl · 12/06/2021 13:08

I would guess oo-la and think it's a boy's name. Ulla would be a girl's name like Ella.

BeeKeeping · 11/06/2021 20:32

Thank you for all your comments.

Hmmm... I'm not too worried that it's not Irish. We have Irish heritage but both Scottish and living in Scotland.

Is celtic just a vague term that Americans use?! Surely name meanings are just the meaning that we've (someone's) given to a name? What comes up when you google it...

It seems now that Ula has come to mean 'sea jewel' whatever the actual origin?

Lots of old mumsnet threads have Ula mentioned when the OP has asked for sea themed girls names.

It seems it's quite marmite... but that hasn't put me off. Maybe that's a sign!

As DramaAlpaca says, úlla, pronounced as you pronounce Ula, is the Irish for apples OP.
I've linked the Irish meaning of ula, which would be pronounced differently. Some of those babyname sites aren't at all reliable - I really don't think it's an Irish name meaning sea jewel.

@Camandmitch

Ull-ah
This is how the Ulla I know says it.

It’s not the most beautiful name, I think Oona and Honor are a lot nicer

DramaAlpaca · 11/06/2021 17:55

Úlla is the Irish word for 'apples', if that helps Grin

BeeKeeping · 10/06/2021 19:42

@Serpenta - I hope that's not true, I've tried to do some research and it's got some roots in Irish I believe... Tricky to filter just UK websites and obviously they could have got their info from anywhere...

I do also love Nuala, very similar sounding but DH thinks it's hard to spell Confused

Ull-ah

kimlo · 10/06/2021 19:25

the Ula I knew said ooola. Short for Ursula.

Pugsley87 · 10/06/2021 19:24

Go Nuala instead?

Serpenta · 10/06/2021 19:23

I'd be dubious of that Celtic meaning. It's usually American websites that declare names to have Celtic meaning when 'Celtic' is a very broad catch-all.

user1493494961 · 10/06/2021 19:21

I prefer the dog's name.

BiniorellaSun · 10/06/2021 19:18

Sounds very Clan of the Cave Bear

DotDotDotDotDot · 10/06/2021 19:15

Ah that is a really lovely name meaning OP. Good luck with it whichever you choose.

reallyalurker · 10/06/2021 19:14

Made me think of Ulli in Helen Dunmore's short stories, but Ula is prettier.

BeeKeeping · 10/06/2021 18:32

@DotDotDotDotDot I think it's supposed to be oo-la but you-la would maybe be an alternative. It's quite multi-cultural with scandi/polish/Spanish/celtic origins.

I picked it because of the celtic origin meaning "jewel of the sea"

Serpenta · 10/06/2021 18:31

I might guess ulla or I might try oola, depending on my mood.

ApolloandDaphne · 10/06/2021 17:39

Oo-la. I like it. It sounds Scandinavian to me.

DotDotDotDotDot · 10/06/2021 17:35

How is it actually meant to be pronounced OP? I’m not too keen either way to be honest, sorry. I do like short girls names though if that’s what appeals to you. Maybe Orla, Liv, Zoe, Cora, Eve?

EssentialHummus · 10/06/2021 13:12

I’d say Oo-la. It made me thinks of The Producers, not sure how many people would have that association though. I’m not a fan op, sorry.

BeeKeeping · 10/06/2021 13:10

@Holidayhomeone I did yes- it's top of the list at the moment so on my mind a lot.

The other post was about whether or not folk thought it was too similar to my dogs name Ella. Opinions differed according to pronunciation so I wanted to know how most folk would say it.

It's pretty rare so I'm not getting my fix of scrolling through mumsnet past threads!

Didn’t you post about this name the other day?

BeeKeeping · 10/06/2021 13:01

@Watercoloursky Yes! Although when I looked it up hers is "Ulla" I've never watched it
