Safe or wild card?

So we're down to a safe compromise name, Sophie.

I totally love the name Gloria for some reason and it'll at least be her middle name. Maybe I'll regret not putting it in first position though...

So which name? Sophie or Gloria?

Defo Gloria. It's lovely.

TatianaBis · 09/06/2021 11:23

Love Gloria.

Sophie is so dull and everywhere now. She will be Sophie P for life.

WimpoleHat · 09/06/2021 07:42

Gloria is nice; it’s unusual (in that you don’t hear it often), but still a perfectly well recognised name that people will know how to spell! If you like it, I’d go for it.

Poorlykitten · 09/06/2021 07:40

Sophie is just dull. Gloria is awesome!

celestebellman · 09/06/2021 07:39

Choral

celestebellman · 09/06/2021 07:38

Gloria - Sophie is extremely dull.

I think Gloria in Modern Family has made it more of a glamorous and refreshing name compared to what may have been previous stereotypes. Also makes me think of chorale music - eg Vivaldi’s Gloria, which is really beautiful.

Lockdownbear · 09/06/2021 07:35

Gloria its not that wild!
Sophie is a tad over used and boring. Actually I can't imagine an elderly lady called Sophie.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 09/06/2021 07:34

Gloria.
I love it. It's so happy and exuberant
I have known a couple of Gloria's who were both South American so maybe still popular there.

Sophie I hate. It's a Labrador name.

I say go for it and name her Gloria

Merchymor · 09/06/2021 07:31

@Violetlavenders

I wouldn't shorten Gloria. It's beautiful and so easy to say. Certainly not to lorry.
I was thinking more Lohh-ree But ok...
DinosaurDiana · 09/06/2021 07:30

Sophie. But I prefer Sophia.

Violetlavenders · 09/06/2021 07:28

I wouldn't shorten Gloria. It's beautiful and so easy to say. Certainly not to lorry.

Merchymor · 09/06/2021 07:13

You could use Lori for a nickname The more I hear Gloria the more I like it.

Frogcorset · 09/06/2021 07:07

You might as well call her Girl#789344 as Sophie these days. Gloria is quite nice.

Violetlavenders · 09/06/2021 07:05

Sophie is boring and she'll be known by her surname

Gloria is interesting and memorable!

So Gloria 100%

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/06/2021 01:34

Sophie - classic, pleasant sounding, suits most women, kind of a "can't go wrong" name (although with all the Sophia's/Sofia's about now as well, she may not be the only one in her peer group).

I love most "ia" ending names - Claudia, Sylvia, Julia, Lydia, Antonia etc (secretly even "out there" ones like Cassiopeia!) but Gloria somehow has a brassy blonde, "mutton dressed as lamb" sterotype image to me that I struggle to get past, sorry! I don't know why because it should make me think of feminist Gloria Steinhem instead - but perhaps now the new film "The Gloria's" has come out, this will be most peoples image of the name instead?

alexdgr8 · 09/06/2021 01:31

@Angel2702

I prefer Gloria. Whilst Sophie is a lovely name the fact there are so many Sophie / sophias makes it a little dull.
agree
lakesummer · 09/06/2021 01:25

There are so many Sophies, I would go for Gloria.

wishing3 · 09/06/2021 01:01

Oh, I like Gloria!

Twillow · 09/06/2021 00:53

Sophie is safe but rather dull now. Gloria feels ready for a revival, such a feel-good name!

Hollydays · 09/06/2021 00:35

Gloria. But I’d say if you have to get persuaded to use the name it’s not the right name.

DramaAlpaca · 09/06/2021 00:22

I know two Glorias, both very middle aged. I can't see it on a young girl, tbh.

I'd say go for Sophie Gloria - but it reminds me of the brand name Soap & Glory, so maybe not.

Enough4me · 08/06/2021 23:38

I really like Sophie, average pretty name.

Gloria sounds like one of my DM friends.

reallyalurker · 08/06/2021 23:31

Gloria is great. Though I wonder how you'd abbreviate it - Glor isn't very nice and Ria feels a bit of a distance from the name. Glo?

ElizabethTudor · 08/06/2021 23:20

Definitely Gloria.
Sophie is so over-used and as you said safe, and quite frankly, boring.
Go for glorious Gloria.

Serpenta · 08/06/2021 23:17

I love Gloria. It's got sass and vim.

Sophie is fine but has been so popular for so many decades now. The name Sophie is now out of stock.
