A sister for Seren

Have found out this weekend that DC2 is another little girl. We already have Seren, DP has Welsh heritage without being truly Welsh and we are in England.
I think my shortlist is quite a random mix of Cerys (don't like Carys so much) or Elin for another easy Welsh name, or Charlotte or Lucy.
DP has his heart set on a really Welsh name that I really don't like and he got to pick DD's name so I've vetoed it but it would actually work as a middle name with either Charlotte or Lucy. We aren't too worried about middle names and won't have to worry about family names being used as there's too many women to keep them all happy 😂 Surname is two syllables and sounds fine with all four of my choices.

Any thoughts to help me narrow it down?

Marry and Mally. The 'ah' sound that you get in Mali (country) and Marley doesn't exist in Welsh

Eirys is not really a name - it's Iris welshified.
Esi - not a welsh name, might be short for something

Eirlys is a welsh name but it's terribly grannyish

shesellsseacats · 07/06/2021 13:17

@MorningNinja

Mari and Mali are just two of my favourite welsh names.
Are they pronounced more like Marry and Mally, or Marr-ee and Marly - or something else?
SilentPanic · 07/06/2021 13:15

Cadi Swyn looks too much like Cadw Sŵn, quite appropriate for a baby. Grin
Nia is a winner if you don't live in Wales and/or speak Welsh. I also love Siân and Eirys.
I also heard of an Esi recently. That's lovely.

Mari and Mali are just two of my favourite welsh names.

Loads of great ideas here, thanks ladies (and any gents of course!).

You were meant to be making the list shorter for me, not longer, but I'll let you all off 😂 definitely won't be able to use anything that will be difficult to pronounce out of Wales (leaving aside the correct Vs anglicised pronounciations that we already get with Seren of course, subtle differences are fine by us) but there's still plenty of new options for us to discuss.

I think the key message is that Lucy and Charlotte are off the table!

Elin and Seren don't rhyme.

Swyn is awful sorry and someone will try to say it as Swine. The diphthong makes it difficult to say if you don't speak Welsh.
It is like Soo-in but the oo an i joiin together.

Cadi Swyn looks too much like Cadw Sŵn, quite appropriate for a baby.

OpenUpFleur · 07/06/2021 11:49

Just came to say Seren is gorgeous!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 07/06/2021 09:09

Malin or Lyra would go beautifully imo

CaffiSaliMali · 07/06/2021 09:04

Got Nia from another thread Blush

Elin is my favourite from your list. I really like it but my DH doesn't sadly. It goes very nicely with Seren.

CaffiSaliMali · 07/06/2021 09:02

Elin is Elle-in (in as in the english word in) and Seren is SERR-en (en as in hen). So I don't think Seren and Elin are too similar.

Seren and Lili are nice together but you may want to avoid now the Sussexes have used it.

From your list I really like Nia.

Seren and:
Eira
Eirys
Eirlys
Enfys
Eleri
Tesni
Meleri
Mari
Mali
Teleri
Nerys
Ffion
Nansi
Lwsi
Ela
Efa

Eira (star and snow!)
Lowri
Catrin
Lleucu

Howmanysleepsnow · 06/06/2021 21:57

Eirlys

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/06/2021 21:43

Agree with pp's - Nia works well for dual heritage and with sister Seren. But I think Cerys is fairly straightforward for English speakers too thanks to Cerys Matthews (Elin is lovely but a bit soundalike with Seren).

MrsFin · 06/06/2021 21:36

Also Welsh.
I'd pronounce wyn as English win.
But I agree. Sw-in. Or Soo-in for the English.
I prefer Siwan (Shoo-an)

whiteflower84 · 06/06/2021 19:45

@MrsFin

Swyn = S-win
The Sw is more pronounced now my opinion, I'm first language Welsh and that's how we would pronounce it ... Sw-Un Grin
whiteflower84 · 06/06/2021 19:38

Nia
Sian
Ffion
Elen

Swyn Sw-IN

Lemur12 · 06/06/2021 19:25

I know a Seren who has a sister called Lyra, which I think is lovely as Seren means star and Lyra is the name of a constellation.

FrancesFlute · 06/06/2021 19:16

Nia!

MrsFin · 06/06/2021 19:16

Swyn = S-win

Polyethyl · 06/06/2021 19:14

Eira

MrsFin · 06/06/2021 19:14

Love Cerys, Ffion, Elin

Also Angharad, Lowri, Bethan, Catrin, Haf....- so many lovely Welsh names

Yutes · 06/06/2021 19:12

Bronwen

PensionPuzzle · 06/06/2021 19:11

That was reply to@MangosteenSoda. Thanks all for some extra ideas for the list for me to float with DP 🙂 I wish we had made the move to Wales tbh (one day) as a lot of the nicest names would sound a bit out of place where we live now with neither of us being obviously Welsh.

I don't think they quite do if pronounced properly,as it's more en and in, but I think when said with an English accent it's the emphasis on the n at the end that makes them a bit close.
